Not a lot of love for the Nex cameras on here that I can see so I thought i'd try to gather users together in one place.

I've recently moved to a Nex 7 from a large dslr setup and think it's the best combination of size, features and performance I've so far used. Whilst I can see some limitations in AF (which I can live with) and current lens lineup (which if the rumours are correct will be put right soon), the combination of kit size, decent evf, sensor size and performance and ability to use legacy lenses easily (focus peaking) have meant I'm actually taking photos again.

So let's see some images and have a chat about our experiences, what lenses we use (or want to see coming out) and pass on any tips to get the most out of our cameras.
 
Hi, I'm currently waiting to see the full details about the 3 new E-Mount lenses that Sony are due to announce tomorrow (specifically price!). Apparently, their specifications are;

16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS pancake (retractable) powerzoom
10-18mm f/4.0 OSS (non pancake)
35mm 1.8 OSS prime lens

There are also the NEX-5R and NEX-6 bodies;

Supposedly this is what the NEX-6 will be with a reduced resolution EVF (similar to the NEX-7), 16Mp and built in APP support and Wi-Fi;

I tend to grab my NEX-5 over my 40D for most days out etc due to the combination of size and video recording but still revert back to the DSLR shooting studio/weddings (along with the NEX as a second body with manual glass!).

My main lenses on the NEX are;

- 18-55 Kit - Good for video with the OSS and ease of use for the other half
- OM Zuiko 50/1.8 - Fantastically sharp small pancake with smooth focus and bokeh for very little outlay.
- OM Zuiko 28/2.8 - Almost as sharp as the 50/1.8 but slightly slower and nearly twice as wide FOV.
- OM Zuiko 50/3.5 Macro and extension tubes - Brilliant macro lens, small, light and very sharp
- 35/1.7 'CCTV' - Unique results and surprisingly sharp in the centre and was used at the last wedding I covered for some 'lensbaby' style shots.

I curently have a 5D and Panny G1 but I'm thinking of changing the G1 for something else soon and a Nex 6/7 may well be pretty high on my list of possibles especially now that a 35mm f1.8 seems to be on the way.

One thing I'd like to ask Nex 7 owners is how is the EVF in very low light?

I occasionally shoot in very low light and have to revert to my 5D as I find that in low light the G1 EVF is better than an OVF but as the light drops still further my G1 EVF just completely blacks out and will not display what can still be seen through an OVF and by eye. Another problem is that the G1's EVF acts like a torch and shines its light directly into my eye making it uncomfortable to use for any length of time and distroying night vision.

So, if anyone has used a Nex 7 in very low light, almost at the point or even passed when human night vision kicks in, I'd appreciate some feedback.
 
@woof woof the viewfinder in low light is usable, it depends on the screen setting as to how it reacts. If the setting is to show exposure then it goes dark and noisy and refresh slows down, if set to normal then it boosts light levels and keeps refresh as high as possible. I'll try it in darker conditions and report back but what kind of light are you talking about?

Steve you have a great setup and the shots are great. My lenses are:

E 18-55 OSS - better than I expected and a useful walk around lens
E 50/1.8 OSS - great lens, ok wide open but really sharp from 2.8 on
Tamron 90/2.5 adaptall 2 - another sharp lens and not too big on the 7

I'm really hoping the 10-18 is affordable but wished they'd done a 24/2 or similar at a reasonable price rather than the 35/1.8 (assuming the rumours are correct).

I have a nex-5 which i bought 2 years ago with twin kit lenses, And now we are looking at the 3rd generation of this camera. Sony are updating this camera every year which is no bad thing as its getting better and better but not much good for the consumer to buy a camera only to find it gone out of date the next year.

Also the tft screen on the nex-5 which will be fairly similar to the newer ones too is coated with something which has rubbed off very easy on my camera and looks a bit unsightly now.

Apart from that its a great little camera but i wonder how it will fair now with the Canon M which is just round the corner.

Very low light, not just outdoor town nightime when there's really quite a bit of light but out of town countryside night shooting and shooting indoors in low light such as my 5D allows.

Apart from the blacking out issue one thing that showed the reason why the G1 EVF is so uncomfortable to use in low light was pointing the camera at my hand and seeing the bright square of light it puts out.

Thanks Soulman. Strangely I've just sold my Tamron Adaptall 90/2.5 as I use my OM Zuiko 50/3.5 macro more. The working distance is longer on the Tamron but performance is about equal so I didn't need both. I do keep thinking about an upgrade to the NEX-7 but the NEX-6 might prove to be the best option due to being mid-price and also lower Mp so potentially push the sensor less. I'm definitely interested in the new UWA and possible the 35mm.

It was the working distance that persuaded me to go for the Tamron, I tried the 30mm Sony macro but found the focusing poor, working distance too small and IQ no better than the tamron.....

The NEX 7 is great, I couldn't do without a viewfinder, I do think though it would have been a better camera with the 16mp sensor in it.

I followed these instructions (He had them written on a forum, but I can't find it at the moment), it was easy to replace and the replacement cover is far more transparent. Just incase you ever wanted to replace it.
 
Yeah, I was watching the Sony IFA launch although was a bit disappointed there were no lens details announced as predicted. Apparently they're being announced at the same time as the NEX-6.
 
To be honest it didn't really interest me and won't do until we see more about the hybrid af system. The 6 sounds more interesting and what I' really after is a wideangl zoom and a couple of more primes ( cheaper 24mm and a longer 2.8 macro of 80 or 90mm)
 
I'm really enjoying using the legacy lens on the nex, I'm going to build up a collection of OM lenses to use as well. Anyone have any suggestion, was thinking of the 24/2.8, 50/1.8 and 135/3.5.
 
Hi Soulman,

I've got an OM Zuiko 135mm 2.8 listed on here if you're interested? I'm about to drop the price to £65 :0) I've also got a 28/2.8 and 50/1.8 and they're all really good on the NEX because they're small, light and focus really smoothly.

Sorry mate, I've just updated my for sale thread because it's sold on Ebay. I listed it last week but it hadn't sold until just after I posted my last message!

There are usually quite a lot of the 135mm/3.5 lenses on ebay and you can pick up a 50/1.8 for less than £15 easily. To be honest, the 50/1.8 is probably my favourite manual lens on the NEX so I'd definitely recommend that.

I'm not linked to this auction but this was the first 135/3.5 that came back (£40)

Not long to the expected announcements at Photokina, what are people expecting or looking forward too.

Seen some wild NEX rumours the last few days, full frame but no FF lenses(!!)
