On holiday in Australia last week I had the chance to have a play with a 7D. I was amazed on how well, in AV mode, it exposed every shot, even when shooting against a bright blue sky.

The metering and AF systems seem to be very good. Combined with the 24-105 and my Canon flash unit I was very impressed.

I'm now considering selling the 40D, the 50D and the grip to raise the funds to get one myself.

Understandable, but I'm not sure I would do this. What about selling one of the cameras, and the grip, and keeping the other one as a back up? Having two bodies can be quite handy if you want to avoid changing lenses in the field too.
 
I agree with martyn would keep one of the bodies
know what you mean about the 7D though I had a play at jessops very impressed
