Oh my Goodness, I should have stayed away from Currys

Yes
Popped into my local Currys superstore today for a quick shuftie - I was actually hoping for a nose at a D300 and for my curiosity to have a quick peek at the Canon range.

Well, what a mistake! They didn't have the D300 to compare, but having looked at the 50D Canon, I've gone and fallen in love with it.

So, what are the ramifications of moving from Nikon to Canon? I have a D70 with a couple of lenses (a 28-105mm, a nifty fifty and an 18-55mm) so it wouldn't be too drastic in terms of lens technology.

I'm intrigued to find out if people have moved from Nikon to Canon and what their feelings were :)

There are no ramifications but there is the satisfaction that you would be leaving the darkside and it will soon become a distant memory :D

err(99)......

:nono:

:naughty: :exit:

Seriously though, one is as good as t'other, it's more down to handling and ergonomics than anything else.

try the D300 before you make the decision

I hate to say it and if a certain member sees this I will never live it down....
The D300 does seem like a good body but due to the price difference I think it's hard to compare it with a 50D.

Join the club mate. :D

You've seen the light(side) now embrace it

What? What? :thinking: :nuts::eek:

the "err(99)" thing was an error message caused by an earlier release of the 50D's firmware that got sorted a long time ago now, so won't be affecting the new stock in Curry's.

Which other member are you talking about, Hash??? :naughty:

Thanks for the replies :)

To be honest, I'm not sure of the specs side by side D300 v 50D, certainly price wise there is a little in them, albeit I could get away with just a body if I stuck with Nikon which brings the price much closer...

I'm just amazed how much I liked it in the hand  I tried the other Canon's on show and none of them compared in the same way, and I wouldn't have bothered otherwise!

I moved from Nikon to Canon early last year, do I regret it? No, both marques produce very good cameras. The newer cameras in both ranges are very good and once you have whatever you choose you would be well advised to buy good glass.

Personally i believe that Canon produce some excellent glass at more reasonable prices than the Nikon varients and offer a greater number of options too!

Just picked up my Canon 7D last week with 15-85mm lens. Moving from the Nikon D300 as I needed to down size my lens collection and free up some money so thought it was a good time to change.

Ah ok, now I get it :)
I refuse to name him as a) he is a friend and b) he is a D300 owner and c) he is so going to give me some stick when he sees this thread :D

Drifting off topic...I was in a Currys today. The Lakeside 'Megastore'. Huge place.

I was equally amazed by the camera displays. They had a 1D3 , 500mm F4 IS lens at £5400, A 5D2 with 24-70 2.8 attached (no price label) all in a display case with other stuff. Oh and a 7D and 50D out on the display tables for people to grope but not lift as they were wired with alarms.

Just surprised to see this level kit in a currys store!

My local Currys is the same - an amazing display of top end gear! Not exactly competitive prices though.

For a more entry level style input, I just moved from a Nikon D40 to a Canon 500d and have no regrets so far (especially as my D40 just sold for £100 more than I paid for it on ebay, Raynox here I come :D).

For me canon has more variety and cheaper lenses (I know a few will argue with this but this is my personal view). Come over to the light side.

Also I bought my 500d from Comet, same company as Curry's, and was pretty amazed at the price I could get. With the £50 cashback, and a 6% off all orders over £500 (old internet coupon, now out of date) I saved quite a bit compared to internet prices too.

EDIT - On a totally off topic comment, why do mods keep closing threads just as I've written a witty reply and don't have chance to post it :( lol

So to check I wasn't dreaming I popped back in to Currys to have another feel of the 50d and it was as good as I thought the guy then said we have a D300 out the back if you want to compare which I did. I still prefer the Canon I have to say

The guy mentioned the 40d was dimensionally the same as the newer 50d, can anyone confirm this??

The 5DII can't be far off either.

I always thought that they looked big but when I checked one against my 20D it looked like it was within a couple of mm each way.

5DII - 152 x 114 x 75 mm (6 x 4.5 x 3 in)
5DI - 152 x 113 x 75 mm (6 x 4.5 x 3 in)

5DII - 152 x 114 x 75 mm (6 x 4.5 x 3 in)

That's coz they have to squeeze that bigger sensor in there, innit?

I was in currys at lakeside as well and they had the Nikon 105mm f2.8 G AF-S VR IF ED Micro Nikkor Lens over £100 less than wearhouse express. I think a big price error there  they were £483

funny thing is that currys staff will pummel you to take the extra insurance cover on their products, ..which costs a fortune..thats where the staff bonuses come in.
Watch out, they are pushy...so pushy it may put you off buying.
stay away from the insurance.
you can get better much cheaper.
Stand firm, dont flinch.. pay the sale price with no insurance (if you can),stay friendly (if you can), you have your manufacturer warranty anyway.

Good Luck Currys Shoppers.

Damn, missed the cameras when I was in there the other day :bang: Too busy looking for a new hard drive and rushed for time.

Still I will be in the area 2 or 3 days next week, looks like a long lunch break is required.
