Soon to be nicknamed the bleedinhugema :)

It looks like a cross between a thermos and a rocket launcher.

at that weight you'd expect it to have wheels

I see its got its own batteries - presumably the cameras battery can't cope with the strain of powering the AF motor.

Tripod choice would be critical to take 16kgs of lens plus camera as well.

I think it's got its own climate!:D

I might get one if I can find a suitable bracket to fix it to my Zimmer frame. ;)

Woo hoo, I wonder if it will be on their stand at Focus?

I hope so, this lens deserves a grope, I mean checking out! :D:D:D

sigmassive!

Try taking a pic of the london eye with that and watch the security have an eppy where they stand

with a lens like that you could take the london eye from your back garden!

You carry this around and the police are going to have a field day reading the terroist act.....

Whats its price, or have I missed that?.

It will be a case of putting the camera on the lens and not the lens on the camera, its huuuugmongus. Definatley get a terroist tag if you use that :p.

He He, imagine lugging that around all day.:gag:
With the ever increasing high ISO performance of todays pro spec SLRs it makes you wonder if its really necessary to build and carry about a 500mm f/2.8.

I was kinda thinking the same thing !!!

YUP not a great deal of difference there !!!

and I live 98 miles from london :D

You carry this around and the heavily armed police are going to have a field day reading the terrorist act whilst holding your face up against a brick wall for carrying a dangerous weapon.....

you had left out a few important words :D:D:D

Need to get down the gym to train up just to carry the beast

Thats a mirror lens, it kinda cheats a bit:|

There is bigger though

The 6x6 Hassy looks lost on it, and...what !...no AF..

it weighs nearly 600lbs

Ah, but this becomes a 800-2000mm with the included tele-convertor @f5.6!

Couple that with a 4/3 system camera and you have a 1600-4000mm equivalent FoV!!!!!!!

or just 1200-3000mm on an aps sensor.

Ho Hum.

I think the green colouring is a severely dodgy marketing error in todays climate though.

Nope. It becomes 400-1000 with the included teleconverter. The lens is 200-500mm.

RRP is £17k
I was expecting it to cost more, quite a bargain ;)

No HSM?

Besides, isnt this old news? Whats the new announcement for? Are they actually releasing it now then?

Before I think it was just the prototype. now its actually in production. And I don't think its got hsm, but it does have its own internal mechanical motor that uses its own batteries.

I think the prototype was black and had a Briggs & Stratton engine to run the AF which failed the emmisions test hence the new green battery powered model.

OK, so the "street" price will be ... what? About £14k?

At that price, if our hire shop bought one we'd be able to hire it out for about £700/week. (Plus delivery which might be significant.) Do you think there would be any takers?

me me me me:nuts:

Enough to cover the cost of the lens? - I doubt it.
