My Rules:

1 - I must do at least one picture a week, ideally I will do at least 3 and where possible, 1 a day.
2 - There will be days when I use zoom lenses, for previously booked work only, any other images will be with a 50 or 28mm prime lens.

Seemples - just pictures for my pleasure.

Spent today at a wedding, so running mainly on zooms and we were tight for time too, so only managed a quick shot with the 50mm, but hey, I figure it can only get better from here on it ;)

Well I should bloody well hope so too. Pull ya finger out girl :D

Well, after what turned into a chaotically busy week here, Yves Geza and I spent the weekend relaxing in Bristol. True to the challenge, I stuck to using a 50mm prime only, and got a range of pictures.

I am going to start though with one from this morning, it's a stitched pano from 3 shots as I couldn't get the full width in with a single shot and I thought it worth getting. The morning was miserable, damp and very windy but as we got down to the foreshore to grab the obligatory Severn Crossing picture, the sun poked through the cloud and a rainbow appeared over the bridge. It has had quite a bit of processing to bring out the detail but I think it was worth it.

I will post some more from the weekend later. :)

Thanks Guys, certainly being in the right place at the right time isn't my normal MO

Anyway, a few more, standard 50mm stuff this time.

1 - Sunset over the Avon Gorge

3 - If ONLY they had turned round!

There are more on my flickr photostream if anyone is interested, including one the non stitched bridge pictures. ;)

The man learning about gravity is fantastic  Having some people completely oblivious makes it better as it is a captured moment that would otherwise been completely missed.

Rainbow pano is excellent too. Looks like two of us snagged rainbows this week :)

Love the colours in those flowers on your first shot, Yv, and I love the pano. Good timing with the rainbow.

What was happening on the last shot? Great catch!

what on earth was happening in that last picture...deliberate or messing around ?

The last picture, we had watched the group of guys for a few minutes, and what we think was happening was the guy doing the flip off the wall was a parkour 'expert' and the others were beginners he was offering help and advice to. This is only a guess mind, as the others only did running at he walls, nothing fancy. The group of women had gone to chat to them briefly and it was whilst they were walking away the guy did the somersault flip against the wall. It was just lucky I was focusing on the scene at the time tbh, it was so quick I would have missed it in the time it would have taken to get camera to face. :)

Well it`s about time ;)

Good set Vonne, the bridge is great, and I love the upside down guy

Love the pano shot......

Like the Bored shot as well....

Keeping things nicely on target for my month, a couple more. I went up to manchester yesterday and did a shoot with my daughter, her B/F and my new grandson. I don't really do babies or young children, prefer them a bit more 'directable' but right at the end of the session, as we were packing up, he finally fell asleep, so grabbed a few with the 50mm and a couple of those props we had planned some 'lovely sleeping bare baby' type shots that people love these days - didnt happen of course

1 - presented to you on a plate, is 6 week old Luca

2 - squashed face time

Only done quick edits in LR on these, nothing fancy yet.

Super cute Vonne.
I do though, prefer the colour one on flickr of th first shot..

wow.. little Luca.. they're great. Is that a giant plate or a likkle baby? :D

Lovin the parkour shot too, it looks like there's a chance he's not going to make the full rotation there

Those two of your grandson are fantastic. I think the teddy one is my fave though

Nick

Some really great shots Yv but I think the rainbow is my fave..stunning.

The baby shots are very cute also.

What fantastic shots of Luca !

Thanks again all

Time for some more pictures, something totally different this time - Birds. I have attempted this 3 or 4 times over the last couple of weeks and only today managed 2 shots worthy of sharing, but its something I want to improve on over the winter, using alternate lenses and some OCF too.
However, in its infancy, this first is taken with the 50mm on the D700 and triggered by remote from inside the house - unfortunately this chap was a wee bit camera shy

2nd one - this one used same set up but with the addition of a simple on board flash. Sadly he was just a tad too far down the branch and his foot got chopped out of frame. However, the birds are definitely getting more and more used to the sound of the camera in close proximity to the feeder and the flash triggering, so hopefully over a period of time I can get improved results.

:)

good set up there Yv. Did you pre-focus on the branch and then retreat inside and wait? I suppose if you get half decent weather you could just snap away all day and see what you come up with.

The open wings shot is a cracker

Very impressed with the Robin Yv, especially with a 50mm, and its great timing IMO. Its a shame about the foot, but thats the way it goes, these birds just dont understand :). Out of interest, are you using a wired or wireless remote.
I'm looking forward to seeing some more shots like these

Many thanks all, will explain set up...

50mm on d700 set at f5.6 and manually prefocused on the branch, but with some effort made to try and keep the branch at the 'front' of the focal range, because the ultimate aim is to capture the birds as they come in to land on the branch from beyond it - the shrubs in the background of the robin picture are mainly where the birds take off from to the feeder, so hoping to push apertures further maybe.

the remote is a radio trigger, so I can trigger it easily from indoors, though I have discovered it isn't keen on triggering through double glazing or anything else solid, so I normally have a window or door, in direct line, just marginally ajar to make sure the trigger works.

The bluetit shot was this morning, without flash, and sun behind or camera left, but as soon as we hit late morning here at this time of year, the leylandii at the back of the garden block the sun until early evening, so it was that problem that made me want to use some flash.

The robin was using the onboard as I am trying to get the birds used to it bit by bit, my eventual aim is to use my Nikon compatible Pocket wizards [which allow high speed flash synch] for some OCF over winter and a longer lens to capture a range of 'in-flight' type shots like the robin. However this prime lens challenge means the camera has to be close by and it really is requiring the patience of a saint, but is worth it, for the stuff I am learning from it and the fact the birds are very quickly adapting to the noise and light from the camera. I don't shoot at every bird that lands in 'the zone', I want them to to be comfortable and still get food without being spooked by it. I am hoping to have better pictures to share by the end of the month, but we shall see. The robin shot is by no means perfect, but it is getting towards somewhere near where I want the winter project to be. It does help that I can sit in the conservatory, remote to hand, laptop on knee to carry on working and door ajar.

A bit long winded, but therein lies my winter project, inspired by having to find stuff to do with a 50mm prime and still be able to work :)

Nice Vonne, very nice indeed
