A friend of mine has just sent me this link...

That is famous scenes of wartime Leningrad blended with modern shots of the same places (it is now called St Petersburg). The wartime shots are, for those of you who do not know, of the time of the 900 days the city was under seige from the Germans and 1.2 million citizens starved to death :'(

I particularly like the 7th one down, the corpses on the street corner and how in the composition the modern day people just walk past "ignoring the dead" - a powerful piece.

good link, very touching.

Interesting way to show the old and the new :)

I went to St Petersburg about 5.5 years ago, it was an amazing place far more spectacular then Prague, in fact I've told friends that Prague is "St Petersburg Lite". I also recognise many of the places and scenes in the images which is cool.

Very clever and a reminder to all that time moves on...

At Piskaryov Memorial Cemetery there are ~half a million people burried in mass graves, each marked only with the year they died...1941, 1942, 1943, 1944. Carved into a piece of granite in the cemetery are the words of Olga Berggolts, a famous war poet:

Know you who gaze upon these stones,
None is forgotten and nothing is forgotten!
