Old Canon Compact worth a punt?

I spotted an old Canon IXUS 980 IS Compact in a cash converters window this morning, I liked the look of the shiny old camera so I went in and asked about it. I was thinking of buying it as an old camera to carry around in the top pocket, or glove compartment of the car and not worry about it getting damaged or stolen as it is a fairly inexpensive and old camera.

They were asking £79.99 but it was not boxed and they could not find the charger. I thought it might be worth a punt, so I asked if they could knock a few quid off as there was no charger. I was thinking I may be able to get a charger second hand off ebay or something, or maybe I could have used one of my old Canon Charges I had at home.

But they refused my offer, so I decided not to guy it! But realistically how much are these old camera's worth anyway?

The 980is isn't that old (2011/12) and having a quick look on Amazon/EBay the price seems about average although the missing charger should count for a couple of £. It's a 14Mp compact with viewfinder so is actually a pretty well spec'd Powershot hence the price.

Hi Steve, oh I thought they were a little older than that, I did not realise they were that recent. I have spotted a few chargers on the net, and they range from anything from about £8 to about £20. So I would be happy if they knocked about a tenner off I would say.

I was only thinking of the camera as a cheap take anywhere and not worry about it getting in the way or stolen type of camera.

Also, the cynic in me is always suspicious of a camera sold without any packaging or charger

Ahh I see, you mean it could be a stolen item, never thought of that :thinking: I may just go back and haggle a little more then. If I do buy it, I will make sure I get a receipt with the serial number on it.

I have an IXUS, in my case an 82 IS. Unless the 980 is significantly better I don't think I'd want to pay that sort of money as IMVHO this sort of camera (judging by my 82 which is frankly, poor) offeres little over something with a lesser name you'll be able to buy down the supermarket for half the price or what a camera phone can do.
 
All a receipt with a serial number on it proves is that you didn't steal it. If it turns out to be half-inched and taken from you to return to its rightful owner, it's you that loses out. You might eventually get your money back through the courts or as a goodwill gesture from CC (or similar) but I wouldn't hold your breath!
 
I think we would need to live in a near perfect world if the police had time to spend tracking down £80 cameras...

probably it was a very fishy item. I'd run away on that suspicion alone.

After a mad dash to the shop and back, I managed to haggle after all. I managed to get twenty quid knocked off after I really did nag the poor girl. In the end she gave in, they even managed to get me a charger after all.

I know it is an old camera, and some may say not a very good one, but for what it is I am happy with it. I did fire off a few shots on my way home, and this was without tweaking any of the settings. After viewing the images on the TV screen, they are pretty good for a camera that cost me so little ;)

To be fair, apart from probably having too many megapixels for the sensor size as with a lot of compacts it seems to deliver reasonable results;

It's still a compact sensor/body so there will be some compromises but I think it's probably better than a lot of the compacts around (I haven't got one, just going by some of the shots in the Flickr pool)

It's a decent compact camera. It's not up there with the best but it's far from the worst you could buy and for £80 it's a decent purchase.

The most important thing is that you're happy with it and hopefully you will be able to make some good use of it.

Just looking at the receipt and checking my change, she only charged me £55.99 How can I go wrong? I suppose it could die tomorrow :|

If I can get a good few months use out of it, I won't cry over it should I drop and smash it ;)
