Old flash for off-camera use with D300s

I have an old flash, I do mean old, a Sunpak 24SR, which has a sync cord.

Can I use it off-camera and plug it into the D300s sync terminal, I don't want to damage the camera's circuits.
 
As already said, it's the voltages. I think the D300 is built for around 5 volts, the old Sunpaks (and others Vivitar etc.) if I remember rightly varied from about 5v upwards, approx 6-7v, 50, some even around 240 I think. I would say almost definately no and I'm not even sure if triggers are built for that. I had one of those little conical photocell flash slave thingys years ago..
