hi guys

apologies for not posting this in the correct forum!
still a bit of a noob so bear with me :)

recently bought first DSLR a Nikon D200, i'm finding my way round that pretty well & seem to be getting some decent shots.

question is- i have an old SB16 flashgun (old fully manual type)

http://www.mir.SPAM/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonf3ver2/flash/sb16ab/manual/index.htm

now i know i'm not supposed to use this on my camera due to damaging the flash circuitry etc
but i know nothing about off camera flashes or related equipment so could it be used/triggered off camera?

i suppose if its unusable with my camera i could always use it hand held manually when doing a long exposed night shot or something similar to illuminte something or freeze some action??

hopefully it will have some use to save it from the bin

I have a few old flashguns that I wouldn't dare use on top of my camera for fear of the trigger voltage some of tehm are using.

However I have successfully used them both with a wireless trigger and an optical trigger for things like table top photography where I needed more than one light, macro photography, and as a main off-camera flash when taking snap shots at a party.

Second the idea of using a transmitter and receiver to trigger off camera flashes. Watched a guy demonstrate this at Focus on the TFC stand.

He said, these flashes have no idea if they are good or bad, they just give out light, so it does not matter which one you use.

He also said don't use the auto set up in things like my SB800 and SB900 as each shot will be different.

Hence he reckons any old cheap flash will do!

Regards

Chris

ah thats good to know :)

i'll see if i can make any sense of the "unusual" control dial & give it a try :bonk:
at worst i can keep it as an off camera unit & buy something more modern/easy to use :)

thanks guys

I've been using an old flash that has a tripod mount as an off camera. I used an optical trigger to fire it.. works fine.

ha ha here's somebody not too happy about being a Flash test dummy

i have managed to tone it down with more natural results, but that expression.............................Priceless
