I have some old Kodak negs - some rectangular (approx 4x6cm), some square (approx 4x4cm). Both colour, and B&W. Any ideas what the rating is likely to be? There are no indications on the neg other than 'Kodak Safety Film'.

What do you mean by rating? When printing or scanning although knowing the film type can be useful you don't need it. They sound like 127 film negatives as 127 cameras usually took 4x4 cm or 6x4 cm negatives.

Could be anything, it depends on the age of the neagtives, if the colour ones are Kodacolor then it could be between 25 and 200 as I don't think that anything faster than 200 was ever released in 127 format by Kodak. With the B&W its likely to be slow, between 25 and 200 again.

If the colour ones are before 1972 then their either the original Kodacolor which was C-22 process and 25 speed. It was marketed from 1942 to 1963.

Up to 1973 Kodacolor-X was the Kodak colour negative film, which again used the C-22 process and was 80 speed.

Kodacolor II (ISO 100) was released in 1972 using the new C-41 process but was only available in 110 until 1973 when it was released in other formats so to allow Kodak labs to prepare for using the C-41 process. Before 1977 when Kodak released Kodacolor 400, this was Kodak's fastest negative film.
