I am looking to sell my Mac Mini and buy a MacBook Pro from the Apple Refurb Store. Ideally I would sell and buy at the same time however the stock on the refurb store changes and moves so quickly I may sell my Mac Mini first before an affordable MacBook Pro comes on.

My question - I know you can migrate everything from the Mac Mini to to a MacBook Pro but should I sell the Mac Mini before hand is there a way to put everything onto an external HDD and then onto a Mac Mini in the same way, without simply taking files but everything including settings?

Time Machine ;)

I don't think Time Machine takes all the Programs though? I have got everything backed up on Time Capsule but want to make sure I can use this to put everything on a MacBook Pro as it currently is on my Mini...?

time machine does save all the programs as long as you haven't told it not to. Be default it saves absolutely everything. So use that.

Alternatively you could use carbon copy cloner to make a complete copy of your hard drive and then import those settings. your new mac will see it as a mac as long as you have formatted it as mac os journaled and guid if it is intel (apple partiton if powerpc)

Cheers for the help - looks like my Time Capsule should do the job then!

Personally I'd get the MBP first then migrate then sell the mini. You don't know how long it will be before a suitable computer comes up. Migration assistant should check that your programs are compatible with the OS on you MBP if there is any inconstancy.

I'd also make a bootable back up as suggested .

Computer Warehouse have ( or did have) some special offers on MBP.... Looks like a new model on the way again.......

The problem with that is I really need to sell the Mini to afford the MBP. They would both be running 10.6 as looking for either a new or nearly new MBP.

We'll have to see what comes around first.

credit card! or Pc world were doing 0% interest on macbooks before crimbo

Time machine 100%. It'll do a complete image if your mac mini, everything will be identical. You can use any USB drive as well, as long as it's big enough and formatted correctly.

I recently sold my IMac 24" purchased in April for the new 27" Imac i7 and could believe how quickly I got it up & running with all my software, e-mail accounts etc just using Time Machine. Within 2 hrs I was fully functional again as if it was the same hard disk. I think I had to re-submit 2 serial numbers (both Apple programmes) and my Backberry Missing Sync I did de-activate before due to it runs on the MAC Number.
