old model nikon flash compatibility?

i have in my posession three old flash guns.
two nikon; sb-22 and sb-23
and one hanimex 1028-n

i know nothing about this kit but would like to know if they will work with my
D90?
and if not, why not?

yeah sorry.
from what i am told they can work in manual mode (depending on model) but not TTL.
gonna get myself the sb-600, 'cos with me being a complete newb, i need to start with something that will do the job automatically! and hopefully learn/experiment from there.

Can you set them so that when they detect a flash, they'll flash themselves? tat would be useful as you could use the SB600 to trigger them for a multi-flash setup.

sorry mate. havent got a clue. i am completely new to this.
the old flash units i have belonged to my Dad. i know nothing about them really!
may look into it in the future, but will try and keep it simple for now.
