Old Nikon flashgun any good with D300?

Iam thinking of getting a cheap SB-50DX just to use to add a bit of fill in light to some of my images, nothing fancy just want a basic cheap one, I would use it on my D300 and maybe D2h would this work okay?

Seems it's only manual on D300 and I've read that it's only at full pop, although I can't confirm that
