Old to new kit

I wonder if I could request some advice.

I have recently purchased a Canon eos 20d.

While searching through various forums in a spell of G.A.S. induced euphoria I found a co. selling lens adapters. Many, many years ago I used to tinker with film. I have therefore amongst my possessions a Yashica / Contax 50mm f2 and it is a lovely lens; I have found a site selling adapters i.e. buy the adapter and I could use the Yashica lens on my eos 20d.

1. am I correct - is the lens usable?
2. are there any pitfalls?
3. most importantly how usable would this set-up be?

I also have a 2x converter m42 mount. Is this usable (with a suitable adapter) with my 18-55 IS Canon Lens?

If this is a complete non-starter please say so. I would consider myself computer illiterate so please bear this in mind if you can respond?

whoops - cost of adapter £18, so is is it worth it or should I forget and go for a modern a/f lens??

For me I would I wouldn't bother,more hassle than its worth

If you are okay with manual focus and providing the 50 f2 is a very good lens then £18 is not exactly a lot of money and I can't see where any hassle is involved. The adaptor works or it doesn't and we have to assume it works?
Buy adaptor, put lens and adaptor on camera, use camera.

to answer the question its doable, but you'll definitely not have af and you may not have through the lens mettering either. opinions vary, but to my mind this is like buy a second hand porsche then fitting it with budget retreads.

i'd say buy a nifty fifty second hand for 30 notes more than the adaptor - and retain your AF and TTL - if you also got a reversing ring you could then use the 50 f2 reversed onto the nifty for macro
