older cheaper FF or newer more expensive

Evening all.

I'm intending to take the plunge to FF shortly. I had decided on either a D700 (although this would mean selling all my Canon gear) or a 5D mk2 (I've an offer on a mkii at the mo).

But, a friend has suggested a 1Ds mk2 or something similar. Older but certainly cheaper.

I'll not be making massive prices and it will be for my kids 80% of the time, with the odd landscape.

IS there something cheaper I should consider?

I know about the argument whether its worth the price of upgrading from crop, but I'd really like the 'smoothness' and increased IQ FF will bring.

Have a look at a 5d original model. They go at reasonable prices now and produce stonking images.

All but EF-S lenses will work.

Just to be clear, EF-S lenses will not fit a 5D or any FF Canon.

The 1Ds series cameras are beasts. They are solid and heavy and while the AF on the 1Ds2 is a bit better than that on the 5D2 I found it slower and less easy to use. I didn't see much difference in image quality between 5D2 and 1Ds2. The 5D2 is a lovely camera, as is the D700. The costs of switching systems is not to be underestimated though.

Full frames get to be expensive though as you see the shortcomings of lenses very easily and get the urge to buy better/more expensive glass.
