Picked up a 80-200mm nikon last night and although I have read reviews highlighting its shortcomings I have to say I am pleasently surprised!.I was expecting mediocre AF soft images wide open plus few other niggles.Happy to say I am more than happy with it.AF speed is pretty swift on my d90 and it seems to lock focus very well.Images are very nice wide open and spectacular stopped down a step or two.Yes I would have loved the vr version but funds didnt permit that and after hiring one few weeks back I was all set to be slightly disapointed with the 80-200 but couldnt have been any far off!. Yes the images from the vr are slightly better and af is a bit quicker but really not sure I would say its worth double! So overall well chuffed.
I just sold one a couple of weeks back. It was a 20yr old push-pull version. It was a cracking lens, every bit optically as good as the 70-200 VR1. I only sold it as I'm planning to get the 70-200 vrII
