Olympus and Nikon Stock Levels

I was in Jessops yesterday and a chap came in and asked if they had any lenses for the Olympus 520. The sales assistant said 'No', which shocked me.

Now I don't own an Olympus camera, and probably never will, but I hadn't realised that Olympus had abandoned Olympus DSLR 4/3 mount in favour of the Micro 4/3 range so much. I know Jessops stock levels don't necessarily reflect Olympus's strategy, but they have only released one DSLR in the last two years.


And speaking of stock levels, Jessops haven't had the D300S in store for awhile, and they haven't had the D7000 for a few weeks too . Weirdly they still have D90's.


Just find it interesting.

Stock levels generally are pretty hopeless in high street stores. I recently moved to Micro 4/3s and even if I had wanted to support a local store by buying everything physically I pretty much had no choice but to buy online.

Micro 4/3 is 'consumer focused' as well, so if any system is likely to be well stocked in Jessops you would expect it to be that.

According to my local Jessops Olympus are hopeless when it comes to supplying stock, and always have been. So much so my local store don't sell Olympus 4/3rds cameras, only compacts. Weird, but there you go.

That's surprising as the Micro 4/3rd seems to be where a lot of the money is. Maybe Olympus can't keep up with the demand. :shrug:

Seems to be a common thing with Micro 4/3s, the Panasonic 20mm 1.7 is apparently rarely in stock in many parts of the world (including the US), the 25mm 1.4 is selling above list price on eBay etc, and I'm fairly positive that the new Olympus 45mm 1.8 will be very hard to get hold of for a long, loooong time given its price point.
