I'm pretty sure it's okay to discuss compacts here too?!

I'm looking at getting a new compact, since mine broke after being bashed about and suchlike, so I was looking into these Olympus ones - the ones which are waterproof, shockproof, freezeproof etc..

However, I don't really know where to start with this range - which ones are the latest etc? Was thinking particularly the TOUGH 8000 and mju 1030 SW..

Also if anyone has had one of these or any of the range, how do they perform? Especially in the shockproof, waterproof department? Or is just worth getting a regular compact and a decent waterproof/shockproof case if there is such a thing?

Any info would be great.

my brothers got a Mju 8000..or 1030..:thinking: he's not had much look, I'll tell him to let you know what its like. ;)
 
Hi Nick at the moment I have the OLYMPUS Tough 8000
I have had both the MJU 1030 & TOUGH 8000 in terms of quality the Tough is better not by much though but it has ISO 64 up to 1600 which is really good & it is lovely to hold & use the MJU 1030SW is also very good quality but I had to send it back numerous times because the silver coloured lens protection kept falling off & the main control & mode dial lost all their stencils with no force as i used it as a normal camera & in the end the camera shop was so "sick" of it constantly coming back with faults that they swapped it for a NEW TOUGH 8000 which has no faults what so ever the only problem with it is one of the rubber seals have come off but they'll replace it for me so overall if you want a stress free compact camera with good quality go for the TOUGH 8000 They have an amazing 2 year guarantee :D best shockproof camera by far :thumbs:

yes i have I'll try & upload them NOW quality underwater is great I'll put one on underwater ignore the subject though one thing i must point out video quality is good both in & out of water but sound is rubbish on both :(

I've got an Olympus Mju 770 SW. It was great until it stopped being waterproof despite every care being taken when changing cards and batteries so that I was as sure as I can be that there was no foreign body trapped in any of the seals. I have replaced it with a Canon D10 and I have to say that the images from that beat those from the Oly hands down as well as the buttons being easier to use. It remains to be seen how well it performs underwater (my main reason for wanting a waterproof camera!) but I'm expecting a similar improvement.

Oh right okay, yeah - I've heard of similar issues with some of the other models too. How long had you had it/used it underwater before that happened? Haven't seen much of the Canon, I'll have a look into that too.

I have used one of the older versions 790SW which was a good camera 7.1 mega pixels, mainly used when canoing so lived in my bouyance aid. Currently I have the Panasonic FT1 (12 mega pixels) which I love, again Shock and waterproof again is in my bouyance aid but also use it other times as well. Reading reviews I don't think there is much to chose between all of them Olympus, Panasnoic, the Canon one meant to be reasonable as well, but a lot more bulky which is why I didn't consider it. I would go to the shop handle them and see which you like best.

Thanks Alan, yeah that's the sort of thing I'd be using it for too. That's obviously the best idea - have to find out what is stocked and then make a trip when I have a shortlist I think! Just reading about the Canon and yeah it does seem a bit bulky. I'll have to go have a look!

theres a group test on DPreview from october or november, worth looking that out.

they preferred the panasonic and the canon, I think.
 
My 770 was just over 2 years old when it leaked. Used for 3 2 week holidays with a dunking every other day so say 20 - 30 immersions. Properly rinsed in fresh water after every immersion with a proper rinse in flowing water at the end of each day as well as on/off cycles to ensure the lens cover mechanism was clear of foreign matter.


ETA.

When I bought the Canon D10, I got it as a bundle with the case and straps. Apparently the accesory kit isn't that easy to find, so if you want the extra straps/covers/case, make sure you can source it! If you can't find one (accesory kit), I may be disposing of whichever straps I don't want but that won't be until after my next trip to warm and sunny climes (probably late June).
 
I have had Olympus 850SW for two years.

I use it when I go sea kayaking - stuffed in buoyancy aid pocket, always wet with salt water. get home rinse under tap or turn hose pipe on it, hang on washing line to dry and then put it away. Never had any problems.

Quality OK but zoom fairly limited.

In rough weather most shots taken quickly and one handed but are rarely blurred.

I'll make sure to look into the accessory kit if I go for the Canon, cheers. At present it seems a bit bulky, but I'll have to go handle them all before any decision is made! Sounds good Ken - 2 years is a decent lifespan considering the conditions too.

hi ya nick have you made up your mind yet? bear in mind thw tough is the only one with 28mm wideangle to my knowledge :thinking:
