Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

Nice shot, go back , open door, and take a shot of what's behind it:).
Have the OM1 ii, thinking of buying Om5 ii and have a lens on each, this pushes me closer.

Ha ha! Someone’s back garden!

Trying to decide between a 100-400 and a 300 + an mc14.

Getting a bit more into bird photography, thinking the 100-400 gives me a bit more choices and I will have a bit left for another lens potentially.

The 300 is brilliant but probably only worth it if you want to chase ultimate image quality - I had one for a while and found the difference in IQ was not worth the extra cost/lack of flexibility. Other opinions will almost certainly differ!

I had the 300 for a few years but sold it when I got the new 100-400mkii which is a super lens and also takes the 1.4 tc , as with mikes comment above

Having a bit a of re think and maybe edging towards a 40-150 2.8 and mc14 to start with.
It will probably get more use from me in general than the 100-400, but obviously limit me much more on future bird photography

The 40-150mm and a1.4TC works really well. Flexible and great IQ. Also works well with the 2.0 TC...

A bit short for birding...

Computer (Excel) says I am about £100 short for both lenses and the mc, if I go for a 2nd hand 40-150 and about £200 short if I get all 3 new from Cotswolds.
So might start with the 40-150 + mc and save up the final bit first the 100-400

Well Olympus 40-150 2.8 & mc-14 ordered from Cotswolds. £973 with some points I had collected.
Will probably keep my plastic fantastic 40-150 for now as it’s so small and light for when required

Hi all, new member here.

I've just bought an OM-1 with 14-150mm Olympus M.Zuiko ED lens. Just getting to know the camera.

I would like to try my original manual Zuiko lenses which were bought for my original OM1 and OM2 with which I travelled the world and to key sporting events (F1, Horse Trials) to great effect.

I have a third-party adaptor for the Zuiko manual lenses to the MFT format which fits. However in Manual mode, and trying different menu settings on the OM-1 I cannot get the camera to provide an image through the EVF or the rear panel.

Does anyone have settings for the OM-1 that would make this combination work ?

Have you tried going to the Menu -> Custom Menu (Gear) -> C1 (or Release/Image Stabilizer) -> Release Priority S-AF/C and turn it ON.

Sometimes the camera does not “see” the lens

Thanks, The menu structure on OM-1 doesn't show that option that I can see ...I'm still trying different settings in the Image Stabilisation and AF menus with no progress.

Which OM_1 model do you have, Mark i or Mark ii? There are differences in the menu between both.

Manual lens. The camera won’t recognise it

To enable "Release w/o Lens" on the OM System OM-1 (or Olympus OM-D E-M1 series) to shoot with manual or adapted lenses, go to Menu > Custom Menu (Gear Icon) > D (Shooting Menu) > Release w/o Lens and set it to On. This allows the shutter to fire when the camera doesn't detect electronic contact with a lens. [1, 2, 3]

It's a Mark 1, bought from MPB so minimal dealer support.
I obtained a second OM/M4.3 adapter - this one is an URTH via Amazon - and the camera can now "see" the lens and images - I've briefly tested with two manual lenses, and both have worked. I now have to work out which, if any, of the manual lenses I have are worth using with the OM-1

Nice that things are now working as expected, I also have the URTH adapter and have never had issues.. Which OM lenses are you considering? I too have quite a collection of OM lenses from my OM-1, OM-2 and OM-4, the ones that I've found most useful are the 24mm f2.8 and the 35mm f2.8 shift. The rest are back collecting dust again.

I can't see the menu options you suggest - maybe those are from the OM-1 mkII or the OM-D E-M1 that you refer to - My OM1mkI is on firmware v.1.7 .

Currently these settings are working in both M and A modes:
AF Menu 6:
MF Assist
(Magnify - On, Peaking - On, Focus Indicator - On)
Peaking Settings (Color - Yellow, Highlight intensity - High, Image Brightness - On)
Preset MF Distance - 999.9m (I will amend this based on experiences)
MF Clutch - Operative
Focus Ring - anti-clockwise
Reset Lens - On

Testing with 4 different lenses (OM 135mm focal length : OM 28mm f3.5, 50mm f1.8, 135mm f3.5 , and a Vivitar 100-300mm f4.2). These were all bought with my entire savings along with the OM1 in my late teens, so couldn't afford the higher level lenses (which will be obtainable s/h now).

I took thousands of shots with these lenses and a teleconverter, of seascapes (pacific islands especially) & tourist type locations around the world,=, 'industrial' on-board ship, and of F1 & horse trials - using high-speed Ektachrome for the sports and Kodachrome 64 for the more static subjects. Mainly with the OM2 bought in Hong Kong after the OM1 got doused in salt water from a huge wave in the Australian Bight.

I also have a couple of OM zooms which I picked up more recently s/h, but those are quite heavy for the OM-1 body and I have seen adverse comments regarding using zoom lenses with the adapters.

I've been considering swapping the 300mm for the newer 50-200. i have the 150-600 ?? decisions
.... I have been regularly (thousands of RAW images every week) shooting sports action for many months now and find the 50-200mm 'Small White' to be faultless. It replaced my excellent Oly 40-150mm F/2.8 Pro which I had since 2019. Heavy rain and mud are no problem to the OM white lenses.

I have had the Oly 300mm F/4 Pro too and it is also excellent but for me a zoom is far more enabling than a prime lens. I sold it along with everything else I could in order to buy the 'Big White' 150-400mm TC about 4 years ago and still love it for wildlife, including large insects.

So I have a 40-150 2.8 and mc-14 on the way.

Have been selling a few bits an pieces and currently have enough for a excellent/good condition 100-400 mk1 from MPB or WEX

I am about £200 short for a 100-400 mk2.

For what I see as occasional use for the 100-400, is there anything that I would really need the extra bells and whistles of the mk2 for ?

Sod it. SRS had a mk1 for £599 with 1 year warranty and 30 day return. So have gone for that for now

Just back from a weekend in scotland. Weather wasnt what i hoped for this time of year but did get the moth light out once and got this Scarce Prominent which was a new species for me. OM1 +90mm macro (and godox v350 with AK diffuser). This was a 25 shot handheld stack put together in Helicon.
I recently watched a lad on youtube who does macro and he was saying about slabbing with zerene to try and get around the halo problems. If anyone is looking at it stacking I would say it is far quicker and easier to use helicon and the B C B stacking method to get the same if not better results IMO.

So the 100-400 has turned up and for me it’s a bit heavy. Then the 40-150 2.8 arrived from Cotswolds and have done a bit of testing.

These are both with the mc-14 on and the 40-150 is also using the 2x function on the camera. Looking tempting to just keep the 40-150.

Depends what you are going to be shooting i think. If you need ultra sharpness but also length (ie wildlife) then i would stick with the bare 100-400 if it was me.

And a little further on we found that the Bluebells had finally decided to bloom.

This was interesting to me. I have a 75-300mm ii that I bought used from MPB in 2020 when I was spending a lot of time in the garden (!). Recently it's started to die - the AF motor buzzes and no focusing occurs, then after a while it recovers. I was *really* close to replacing it with a 100-400mm ii, when I had a revelation about how much bigger and heavier that is. I also realised that I love the fact I can go for a casual walk with family, and the OM5 with 75-300 genuinely fits in the pocket of my fleece, whereas the 100-400mm looks like something you'd take out when you were specifically going on a birding mission (which I never do). So after convincing myself I could justify the cost for the extra capability, of the 100-400 I've now gone full circle and ordered another 75-300mm instead for not very much money (relatively speaking). I am realistic about the IQ of the cheaper lens but I've used mine a lot and been very happy with it.

I had the 100-400 and 40-150 out with me yesterday, quite a heavy bag for me. Arthritis noticing it in my shoulders after using the 100-400 for just over 30 minutes, maybe I need to do some shoulder weight exercises.

At the end of the day, I was convinced I would return the 100-400 and get another 75-300 and maybe an mc-20 for the 40-150.

But on reviewing the pictures, I thought I will keep the 100-400 for dedicated wild life trips and maybe get a 2nd hand 75-300 sometime.

I'm thinking of picking up an OM-D E-M5II if anyone is looking to move one on. Please post in for sale or I can post a wanted ad.

Mistletoe looks a bit fierce there. Also looks rather like the walk I did in Settle!
Not fierce, stubborn! This was going out from Feizor (Elaine's cafe).
See you on the high seas in 2 weeks!
