Olympus OM2 Lenses

Hi All,

I am a newbie to the forum so please bear with me if this is a thread that has been done to death.

I have an OM2n arriving in the post today with a 50 1.4 and am interested in getting some additional glass. Any recommendations and/or warnings?

My interests for the OM2 will be mainly:
- People and portraiture
- Flowers, insects, macro work
- Black and White street photography

Maybe a 28mm f2.8?

You could also look at a 85mm f2 or maybe a 135mm? Not too sure what macro. I'm sure Olympus did some but there may also be some om fit 3rd party lenses you could look at. If the insects are live you might want to look at a longer lens to increase your camera to subject distance and reduce the likelihood of frightening them away.
 
If I recall correctly there were a lot of OM zooms that were alledgedly macros but actually only gave 1:4 mag - the sigma 70-210 (which was sometimes rebadged CZJ) was one such , if you want life size !;! maginification my suggestion would be to get a set of extension tubes to use with the 50mm 1.4 ( I had an OM10 back in the day - probably still hve somewhere)
 
I have a Sigma 50mm f2.8 macro (true 1:1) in Minolta mount and I'm sure I've seen them on evil bay in om mount too. One problem is that with the popularity of compact system cameras the price of older lenses seems to be rising and although there are some nice macro lenses about... they tend to cost a bit these days...

I do prefer a macro lens to tubes as you lose the ability to focus at a distance with tubes whereas a macro can be used more normally.

Another option is close up filters.

Ffordes have some Oly 80mm f4's for £175-200.
 
As has been mentioned above the 28mm f2.8 is a cracker. If portraits and macro are your thing then the Olympus OM-Zuiko 80mm f/4 Macro 1:1 should fit the bill or the more affordable Olympus OM-Zuiko 85mm f/2 or if you want something a little longer the 100mm and 135mm f2.8 lenses are both very good.

You can't really go wrong with any of the Zuiko primes, I have no experience of any of the zooms so can't really comment, although in my experience 1970/80's zooms were a far greater compromise than modern zooms are.
 
There are some lovely OM lenses and you already have one of them with the 50mm 1.4. There are a few macro lenses but most are rare and expensive. The 50mm f3.5 macro is easy enough to find and not too pricey. The 28mm 2.8 is great and cheap. Also worth looking at 135mm 2.8 (my favourite) and the 200mm f/4. Most of the other options seem to be getting expensive these days.

Agree with Nick. Stick to primes, zooms are a bit iffy.
 
The 100mm f2.8 is a gem of a lens, well worth looking out for.

Thanks a bunch for the input folks, I will do some surfing to see if I can dig up some of these lenses. The 80 f4 macro and the 100 f2.8 sound like a start.
 
Glad someone else likes the 100mm/2.8 - I bought one for a modern Olympus as a 'cheap' tele - lovely lens!
 
Picked up a 28mm/3.5, 100mm/2.8 and a 200mm/4 from Clock Tower Camera in Brighton for almost what my Nikon 50mm/1.8G cost, woohoo!
