OM30 takes 5 x LR44 batteries - it won't work without them.
In terms of operation it works in either fully manual or aperture priority mode. Pop it in auto and it will set the shutter speed accordingly.
The OM30 features a focus assist aid that tells you when an image is in focus - the beep can be annoying, but can be turned off.
35mm (135) is readily available. Boots do a 5 pack of fuji colour for around a fiver - ideal for testing.
You may want to check the light seals as they can fail. Cheap and easy to replace if they have

To open the flim compartment pull up the rewind knob/lever and the back should pop open - it does need a fair pull. If it still sticks then you may need to "help" it by pulling the back slightly.
It could well be sticking due to perished light seals. The seals are just bits of foam that sit along all the places were light can get in. It's perfectly normal for them to perish over time - the crumble or become sticky. You can get a replacement kit on ebay (comes from the states) for under a fiver and changing them is very easy (takes around an hour). I've done both my OM10 and 30 and it is very easy (and I am non mechancally minded!)
Processing is cheap for C41 - around a fiver for 24. You can get it done in most supermarkets or send off to a specialist like club 35.

oh yes i wasnt pulling it up enough, it just popped open. thank you very much, i have never used a film camera apart from a disposable so its all new to me.
my dad said i can have it or put it on ebay but as they sell for so little i want to keep it and give the old style film a try!
as the film compartment just pops open now do i still need to replace the light seals?
what do you use your film camera's for?
there is a new film in the bag with the camera will this be any good after all this time? it is agfacolor xrg 100 135 36 if that means anything to you?

One way to find out, stick it in and try it! Theres a little switch underneath that allows you to turn the beep off. It also turns th battery check beep off too, so watch that! The Focus assist lights are quite useful, but I prefer to use the split prism for focussing anything critically - although it's quite nice to se that what I think is focussed the camera seems to agree!

Lift up the right hand dial and turn it till 100 is displayed in the window. Then let go and turn it so that the big line is against the mark on the viewfinder hump. so it slooks like - --ASA 100 when viewed from above.
Don't forget to wind the film between shots!

You don't know anything of limitations, you wait until your little one arrives! Live itself will be limited, as will the photographic opportunities for anything else but them!

You can use that emoticon all you want but I have been going through it the past 16 months!
By the way, to the OP, get out and use the OM30. Oly OM lenses are of great quality and will get you some superb shots and loading film is very easy, especially 35mm!
