Olympus Studio Camera - Very suprised!

Hi ,

Currently at university and had the great experience of seeing a local photographer last week in a workshop. (he has an involvement with the uni)
He was shooting an Olympus E30 with a 12-60mm olympus lens and oh my god the pictures he produces are stunning. The colours were superb and the skin tones were amazing.

I asked him about this as ive always been led to believe that if it isnt canon or nikon then its rubbish. And have always been told that olympus are ok but suck in low light and even in low light they arent brilliant.

This chap last week said he chose Olympus as the lenses are far, far better than the others , they are very well built and the images are tack sharp compared to the other manufacturers. Also he said that the low light is a fair point in iso800 and over but as a studio will be shot in iso100/200 then it doesnt affect him.

Any views on the above?

Love Oly cameras, and he's quite right in what he says, the ZD lenses are second to none and sharp wide open right across the frame.

The thing with Nikon and Canon is that they have a larger market share than Oly, and as such they have more people singing their praises.

Oly have always been one of the leaders with innovations such as live view, and useable dust prevention systems with other manufactures following suit.

For ages people (and many magazines) were poo-pooing the inclusion of live view in the Oly range, but now everyone has it. They are not a perfect camera, but there is certainly something about them :)
 
I use olympus lenses on my microscope, I even have a few nikon lenses made my olympus and the quality is amazing. I always used to love the lenses on my old olympus slrs but I think the top end nikon stuff is far better these days

Yes i do think there is something about olympus cameras too. I thought they were all very small cameras but the E30 is a nice size and certainly feels well built.

Im just wondering if anybody would be able to see any difference between an olympus e30 and say a full frame 5dmk2 or d700 as far as actual detail in a studio??
 
Oly make v. good lenses but so do Canon, Nikon, Pentax & Sony.
The 4/3 format does put them at a slight disadvantage from the outset for noise but the differences in performance between various DSLRs is imo geting smaller & smaller all the time.
