The E420 was my first DSLR and was unbelievably good value back then at 300 Euros with both kit lenses 
(overstocks clearance at the local superstore 
), but I soon outgrew it 
.
The thing is, the sensor is only half the size of a full frame sensor and this contributes to (very, IMO) poor ISO performance above ISO400, a reduced ability to shoot with very shallow DOF (not helped by the 'slow' kit lenses) and I found it to be so unergonomic that it made my fingers ache from gripping on to it so tightly (it has no side hand grip, unlike almost all other DSLRs :thumbsdown

Frankly, there are much better starter DSLRs out there from all of the other major players, IMHO. As already stated, changing from your current model might even be seen as a step backwards.

I used to have an Oly E300 and the advantages it had over my Alpha 300 were:
1. Sensor cleaning system that actually works. In 2 years and many lens changes in the field not once did it ever have any much on the lens. The Sony was constantly filthy.
2. The build quality of the E300 was much better than the Sony and this may have contributed to point 1. I suspect that the Sony was shaking off bits of internal stuff onto the sensor.
OK, an E300 is not the same as an E420 but hopefully that might help.

i ve got an e510 ( although i m selling it to upgrade) which does have the image stabilisation. but i think it only really comes into use when you re at the long end of your lens or slow shutter speeds. so i think it would depend on what you re shooting as to whether you need it.
