OMG I like my kit lens!

Unfashionable I know but despite owning a good range of prime and zoom Nikon glass, I still really like my 18-105 kit lens that came with my D90. it is a great walkabout, wide enough when you need it and a bit of length. Not that fast obviously but generally very adaptable.

I do know this is the point of kit lenses but they are often ignored (or at least an object of upgrade-envy) but mine remains a frequently used option. Holidays coming up, I have a 35, 50, 85, 70-200 and 70-300 and a really poor 55-200 (I think) somewhere and my kit lens. Of that lot, what would you take?
 
the 18-105 and the 70-300. Maybe the 50 as well.

Then you can stuff your camera bag with cheap duty free vodka, won't be mauling a hefty weight with you everywhere and won't keep having to change lenses and can enjoy your holiday.

The 35 and the 85, and leave the rest at home.

Lens choice is a very personal thing. And it also depends where you're going and what you're doing. As you don't say I've just assumed it's the sort of holiday I'd like rather than one you may have in mind.
 
TBH these days kit lenses are pretty good, and there's a lot of bowlocks to the contrary written (on the internet, mostly) by people who should know better.

The plastic fantastic 18-55 that came with my old Canon 550D was a great little lens, if a little slow (max aperture is f/3.5, dropping to f/5.6).
 
Used to love my D70's kit lens, the 18-70. Only sold it because the person who bought my D200 needed a lens and I had gone FF so the 18-70 was surplus anyway!

From the lenses listed, I would take the 18-105, 70-300 and (probably, depending on weight) the 50 (for low light situations). Have a great holiday!
 
I agree, kit lenses are underrated. Most of them aren't as fast, sharp and well corrected as their more expensive relatives but they can do most things pretty well if you do your part. I got the 17-85mm with my 30D, and meant to sell it on and get something better, but that was six years ago, and I've never got round to it. Sure, it has weaknesses, and I wouldn't pay full retail for one, but it's handy range and gives me good results.

Something like an 18-105mm sounds about right for a holiday lens. I might add a fast 35mm prime for low light, but I'd only take the longer zoom if I was fairly sure I would use it.
