Sold my 1Ds2 and got a 5D mk2
Let the romance begin.....

Your gonna hate the AF!

AF - Artificial Flavourings?
AF - Air France?
AF - Atiral Fibrillation (give us a wave)
AF - Anal Fingering?

So many AFs to choose from

Seems like a bit of a downgrade to me, but I am sure you have reasons.

Congrats, though there is some reasoning behind the AF posts. I had them side by side, for large aperture primes, 24 1.4mm, 50 1.2 and 85 1.2. Focus acquisition using the outer focus points were unreliable, whereas the 1ds II would be more or less bang on. You may or may not find this, but at the end I just used the centre focus point on the 5d then recomposed. Other things made up for it such as the weight and the large screen.

Well I just sold my 1dsmk3 and got a 5d2:lol: and if I find AF that bad I will just flog it.:D

I am sure you will get used to the AF. It has an amazing sensor, which is seemingly yet unbeaten. It is one of the most popular pro cameras/backups and I would imagine this for a reason.

I know everyone moans about the AF. If you look what has been produced by this camera, it doesn't seem to be the problem many make it out to be.

On the plus side, you can use the video functions as well (now has 24p update in the firmware coming) and be able to have fun with that as well.

I am joining the club in the next cpl weeks, can't wait!

I wouldn't mind a 5D but the full frame sensor would mean I'd have to get rid of my beloved Sigma 10-20 :'(

Thanks for the posts guys.girls. I am very very happy with the IQ it is a lot better than my 1Ds2 at the higher ISO end and it weighs a bit less too, although not a great deal less.

My main reason to change was the weight factor TBH, I have arthritis in my hands (musician too) so the serious heavy 1Ds2 was a bit much and gets heavier as the day goes on.

I have not had any issues with the AF, I know it is a tad slower and there are not so many AF points but I only use 1 anyway so it don't bother me, I am very pleased with it, it has many positives.

Only a certain small group of moaners who can't be happy with their own equipment without poo pooing other's. :)

I have no reason to complain about the autofocus, I find it fast and accurate.

The image quality is AWESOME

Having had a 5DMkII and now having a 1DsMkIII I think you will be very pleased with the 5DMkII. The higher ISO's are much better than the 1DsMkIII and the difference between 3.9FPS and 5FPS is not really that great the AF on the 5DMkII is not as good as the 1D series bodies but no one has ever pretended it is, although the centre point on the 5DMk2 is pretty good.

The screen on the 5DMk2 is better, the video on the 5DMk2 is better and it is both lighter and smaller.

Enjoy your new camera I am sure it will do almost everything that you want it to!

Thanks Ed, the one thing I am totally enjoying at the moment is the Highlight tone priority setting. The dynamic range on the 5D2 is brilliant and there lay my passion.

I loved the IQ of my 5D MkII, but the AF was a major let down, especially when Nikon have the D700 with awesome AF.. i found the 5D no good in low light doing weddings ect, i changed because i needed to have confidence in the camera..

The video, the sensor, the IQ are all fantastic.. just make sure if you shoot in RAW you have some BIG drives for your files!! lol..

Just so you know, I am sure I have read that using the highlight tone priority feature actually cuts down the dynamic range by just under a full stop! Keeps your highlights pure but at the expense of DR.

Correction below:

Actually just been doing a search and if you shoot RAW all the HTP will give you is one stop underexposure from your selected exposure and then brought back by one stop by PP. This causes an increase an noise in the shadows much as you would get with any other image that you 'in effect' push processed.

This is what Ansel Adams would have done with a high contract scene underexposed and then overdeveloped to extend the dynamic range, but as you do not gey anything for nothing you lose out on additional noise/grain.

I'm enjoying my new 5D2 as well :)

The AF is better than I though it might be. Even in poor light it just nails it every time (centre point, but I've only got f/4 lenses). Very accurately, very consistently. It can focus better than I can even using live view on max magnification (movement on the focusing rings of my L lenses is too coarse).

Tried it in servo the other day follow-focusing cars at Rockingham - nailed those too, even though I wasn't really expecting it to. I admit it wasn't a very testing subject that day, but then again the 5D2 makes no pretence at being an action camera.

5D2 is all about image quality, and on that front it's peerless IMHO. I also rather like the HTP mode, sure there's a trade off, of course there is, but this camera has so much IQ in reserve you don't notice a tiny bit more noise. All I know is my prints look better straight out of the box. Vignetting correction is also new to me - like that too. No more noise that I'm going to worry about at my default ISO800 :)
