On a D700 which has best IQ, a 50mm f1.8 or the Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8 (@ 50mm length)?

To the OP - if you don't want to spend so much on the 24-70 then I'd recommend the newer 50mm 1.4G over the 1.8. Contrary to above I think the 50mm 1.4G has better IQ than the 24-70 at 2.8 onwards. And of course it can shoot at 1.4, 1.8 etc which the 24-70 can't.

I think the 50 1.4G is a good compromise between the cheap 1.8 and the expensive 24-70 and is a great lens in its own right.

I have to say that for the life of me I can't see any difference in the two at f/2.8 and above with the 24-70 set to 50mm...
Not at the centre, nor at the edges...

The lack of flexibility means my 50mm only goes on for specific jobs, whereas the 24-70 is my 'standard' on-all-the-time lens...

I didnt even think when I ordered my D700, the 24-70 was always going to be in the bag.
It cost a bit extra (ok, A lot extra) but when i left Canon I swore that I would have at least 1 pro grade lens after using sigma etc for years.

I had a 50mm 1.8 for a bit, we didnt get along too well, I wasnt using the 1.8 for anything in particular so i sold it on.

Now the 24-70 is hardly ever off the camera, and will soon be joined by its big brother the 70-200VR2 (when I earn enough pennies, and have bought more pressing items)
