As per the title I'm off on my jollies to Northumberland in August and will obviously be visiting the Farne Islands. I will miss the main season looking at the websites but would like a full day if possible.

I am thinking of hiring a lens I can only dream of owning from Lens For Hire for the trip and wondered what you think would be the best for my d300. I have a Sigma 150mm Macro but imagine I will need something longer. Also If anyone can recommend which boat I should be booking from experience please add that info for me too.

Sorry for so many questions but I don't want to come home disappointed do I

AFS 70-200 f2.8 :) Thats the one....... OR what you need is a really nice 20mm f1.8 Sigma. I think someone was selling one on here

Random word of advice - you will need to wear a cap!!

A 70-300 might be a good lens too tbh

Well I may just keep the one I nearly sold last week then :) Or I could do with a 2x Teleconverter on the 150mm. I think the 150 with TC would be the better option

Excellent for long shots of Puffins and Seals

John,

The only boat I've used is a sea kayak - not a good platform for using an expensive camera.

This is a site I use for info. You may find the info useful but it also provides a link to boats offering trips.

Don't forget to visit Holy Island also.

Hope you enjoy.

Northumberland is a photographers paradise. Ancient castles galore , beautiful coastline and wildlife. As for the boat trip to the Farnes, I would recommend something with image stabilisation . It might save your bacon as it can get quite windy and could get you a nice shot from the boat. Naturally you will be going to Bamburgh, but be sure to make a trip to Dunstanburgh Castle . It's a couple of miles south of Seahouses and a lovely 14th century castle ruins. Quite remote and the only people you see there are other photographers.

John,

If you promise not to break it I will lend you my 1.4TC and if you are VERY careful my Sigma 20mm f1.8
