I don't have a laptop at the mo, I gather there are hard drives you can get that either have a card reader built in, or allow you to plug one in via usb.

Can anyone recommend something like this, or should I just get a laptop? Looking for something cheapish at the mo due to spending a fortune on other stuff :)

I saw somewhere that you can just buy the enclosures on ebay but I'm not sure what to search for as it just comes up with lots of regular hard drive enclosures.

I think most peeps now use a netbook and a card reader as the price of 2nd hand netbooks has fallen considerably. The other benefit is this allows access to WWW and emails etc if out and about.
 
I use a netbook and an external HDD (although the netbook has 60GB of space in it anyway). That way, I can do basic edits (and add text) using PSE2 and also have another backup as well. The Netbook also gets used to print to a Canon Selphy dyesub printer to produce personalised postcards to send home or give to people as gifts.
