One for the Nikon peeps D40 related

My mother has had a D40 for a few good years and gets some stunning results from it.

Around she uses kit lenses to great effect (I'm guessing being a professional artist helps) and around a month ago her 18-55 died, my father promptly replaced it but she feels that it is not as good as the original.

I can't get over there to compare both lenses but were there different 18-55 Nikon Lenses available and is there any reason why they would act differently?

The new one was purchase from fleabay and seems to act ok AF etc but is not as crisp on close up bits and bobs...

Not sure about older 18-55 models but if it's an AF-S lens then it would be the same as the kit lens.

You can get differences ,but buying off E-Bay ,ESPECIALLY from Hong Kong, you can end up with stuff thats marked Nikkor,but that is just a cheap copy.:shrug:

The 18-55mm kit lens does have 2 versions, as well as a VR version, but I'm not sure how much they differ in terms of optical qualities.

Perhaps the new version is just a bad copy and is front/back focussing.

What's the best way of checking this, on Sunday we're going to Millers Ark to grab some photo's of young far animals so can have a play and grab some examples...
