As Autumn is just around the corner (hopefully, this heat is awful), its got me thinking, what does the current heatwave situation and trees already starting to drop leaves mean for Autumn this year, could we see it earlier than usual?
 
Trees always drop leaves in hot weather - 1: to save water loss through transpiration and 2: because more light = enough energy is converted with fewer leaves.
 
I predict it will be the wettest Autumn and Winter for years as things balance themselves up.

Up North, no drought we had a really wet spring, twice as much rain as last spring according to my weather station.

The heavy rain last night woke me up. Nowt new there then for Settle. :p

I was thinking more would the heat result in an earlier start to autumn colours or could it be a more colourful autumn than normal.
 
The wildlife is all over the place. Birds that were normally here in April didn't arrive until end of June. At least that's my observation. Plants are finishing flowering sooner in some cases probably due to what Nod says. I think we might get the usual Indian Summer though in September - at least I kind of hope so as I'm getting proper air cons installed in the bedrooms!
 
Even fresh water splashes on the local sea marshes have dried up Any green plants are sucking up deep water ,local nature reserves are overgrown really thrown a spanner in the works
 
The leaves on many beeches here in Mid Wales have totally browned, though they're still on the trees - beech is shallow-rooted, so a kind of barometer species in this respect. But many birch leaves have started to yellow too. I don't know the prognosis, but much seems abnormal, as nature adapts ...

There are a lot of us on the planet, pumping out a lot of shyte, but the universe always adapts & will continue to do so, even if it kills us off in the process,
