Also trying out a new light.

space was very tight, with a reflector and barn doors on a boom wobbling about on a cheap stand, and a medium sized softbox directly in front of the subject, trying to get enough ratio between subject and background for pure black.
The background seemed to have worked, not so sure about the subject lighting though. :|

Hi

I'm no expert and I would be very pleased had I taken that shot of my child!

Some possible improvements:
Straighten the jumper/top out a bit - actually it looks a bit big - cute :)
A 'hair light' would probably benefit the picture a lot, make him 'pop out' a bit more.
It does look a little soft, perhaps a sharpen?

Many thanks Jaffamuffin.

I did use a hair light, I was trying to avoid any spill onto he's shoulders, so used a snoot with grid. The trouble is, you don't get any leeway when the subject moves, and this chap was all over the place, I'm lucky to get what I did to be honest.

Thinking about it, I would probably have been better off putting the hairlight on camera left instead of on the same side as the key light, but thats for next time now.

I think its only soft due to resizing for the web etc, its looks pretty good in print.
