One laptop died, what now? Another laptop? Tablet? Netbook? Mac?

Life in our household has consisted of two laptops - his and hers if you like. Hers has died.

My Amilo does everything - net activity inc watching online tv, dvds, email, processing photos (most are stored off on ext hard drives) wp, ss, skype and other typical home computing applications. Wireless broadband. The printer is remote but not wireless.

Hers was used for net activity at lower useage levels, email, family tree software, skype, media watching/listening etc.

So, we need another laptop (laptops rather than pc so we aren't "tethered" to one spot) and the question arises whether we replace a dead laptop with another laptop or whether we consider the wider picture including mine becoming hers.

Netbook?
Tablet?
Mac?

How to eliminate the possibilites, that's the question.

Anyone here selling anything at the moment?

I'd look at a number of variables:

- Portability
- Battery life
- What you want to do with it
- Whether a real keyboard is important

Media generally isn't a problem for notebooks as they have hardware acceleration, but only a few netbooks can handle any form of HD video (again this is handled by the graphics if it is supported). Tablets have more of a problem with HD. At the moment, you need the right encoding to get things to play successfully.

Personally, I like a keyboard and prefer a larger res than the current tablets and small netbooks do. I know a lot of people who like tablets though - guess it's what floats your boat.

As to something available, I'll be selling an Advent Vega tab later today when I've taken some photos and a 17" Amilo Pi 3625 with T5800 proc. in a week or so (when the replacement laptop arrives and I've transferred everything). Nothing wrong with the laptop, just want something top spec for processing large pictures (I'm spoiled by a top spec PC and want something equivalent for on the road use/Ms arad85 to process with)...
