One lens to take on holiday - which one?

Yes
Ok this may seem mundane but hear me out :bang:

Im still toying with the idea of buying a compact but had the idea of taking one lens on my 450D in a hard case.

The situation:

Going to a little known Greek Island early this summer. The hotel does not have any safes so I did not feel comfortable taking my DSLR, the Lowpro rucksack and my kit. As I would feel obliged to carry it around all the time for fear of it getting nicked.

Solution 1

Buy a compact and take that

Solution 2

Take my 450D with the view to keeping it with me but in a Canon EH19-L Semi-Hard Case that would take the body and one lens. I have the standard kit lens, a nifty fifty and a 55-250mm. My thoughts are that I could take the kit lens in this case.

So my questions are:

Do you know if the kit lens will fit in this case with the 450D?

Which of these lenses would you take?

Or would you buy another lens? If so what? (max budget £250)

Thanks for any advice.

I'd think the kit lens and the 50mm would be more use unless you're going to shoot some wildlife, the nifty is so small i'm sure you could find a pocket to put it in :)

I took my 17-50 and 55-250 on holiday with me, I didn't use the 55-250 once so I would just stick to the kit lens and save your money.

Why did you buy and intend to take a dSLR if you are only going to lock it up :gag::nono:? USE IT!

If rubbish photos from expensive holiday are OK then go ahead

Take it out and USE IT, otherwise leave it at home and

It will indeed fit 450D in all cases, it has a compatible mount.

Which of these lenses would you take?

If you don't want to get any other ones, then all of them. You have a really lightweight kit, mine is around 10kg and would still take it.

Or would you buy another lens? If so what? (max budget £250)

The possibilities are endless. Does the island have a nice coastline? Maybe Tokina 12-24mm f/4 for wideangle shots? Are there any features further out? Probably your 50-250mm will do for now. Do you want to take sharp photos around the place when the light gets lower - Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 and a tripod in the bag. If you fancy wildlife then Canon 300mm f/4 IS + 1.4TC, or similar (that will be expensive).

G'day, Iiyama!

Half your luck! A Greek island holiday - wow!

Re your problem, if you sell the kit lens and can wangle just a little more cash, I'd go for a Canon 18-135mm IS lens. They sell here in Oz for around $700 to $800, so probably a bit above your limit of 250 pounds. However, have a look at this excellent review before deciding yay or nay:

All the best, Brian:)

Thanks for all the replies - they have helped focus my thoughts.

No pun intended of course.

For some foolish reason (the concrete thinker in me) never even thought of taking the kit lens AND the nifty fifty:cuckoo:

So thats the plan. (for now) :P

I had the same problem, I,m an Oly man so purchased a 18 - 180 & just took E-3 + that lens, done a great job.

i recently took the 5d and 70-200 2.8 IS as my walkabout.... it was heavy, uncomfortable, got a lot of stares, but was worth it! :D
