Yes
my mate is getting the canon 1000d and there are 2 options for him

1 is with a kit lens for £349, and the other is with the same lens but it has is before it and that is £369

what is the difference with a is lens and is it worth the extra £20

also once he has the camera he will have about £250-£300 left for another lens and he wants to get a dedicated macro lens, what suggestions do you guys have for a lens in that price range and also is there anything else he will have to get to take good macro shots

I can answer your first question... Yes get IS - Its a handy tool to have.

The second question I cant answer as I don't do macro. Sorry.
 
The second lens has image stabilization so yes it should be worth the extra. The macro, same list as always really. Tamron 90mm sigma 105mm or the canon 100mm for a bit more money. There are others like the cosina and sigma 50mm but I haven't used them.

You can't really get a bad macro lens, they are all pretty good.
 
he could get the 50mm 1.8 so he gets a fast prime and with some extention tubes and gets a good macro as well, say a good second hand nifty for £65 notes + 45 up for some extention tubes AF maybe.

that should leave him some extra for other bits or another lens


BTW 370 for a 1000D and kit lens sounds a bit steep get him to check the classifieds and fleaybay.;)

that includes a 8gb memory card and spare battery and they said they will also throw in a carry case.

is it steep with that if so i w ill get him to look else where

EF-S 60mm f2.8 macro, but at about 300 quid it's on the limit of the budget.
 
Nifty fifty and a set of cheap extension tubes isn't a bad place to start for a beginner either and much cheaper, not to mention that 50mm itself is a very useful lens to have.
 
Ive just got the IS version to replace my original 18-55mm and ive found a massive diffrence, able to go down to a much lower shutter speed without blur. All the reviews ive seen talk about a much a higher optical quality as well.
 
IS has better image quality than non IS. £349 does sound steep unless it's from a shop with some form of guarantee. You can pick up a 450D (better camera) with 18-55IS for less than that here...
 
You have your answer on the IS lens bit, regarding the macro lens my advice would be to hold off for a little while. Get used to the lens that comes with it, find where the limitations are and start looking at new glass and accessories from there.

The kit lens will actually allow you to focus very close up as it is. After experimenting for a while he may find that is close enough and the £250 - £300 might suit him better as an investment on a longer lens or off-camera flash etc.

As examples, these were all taken with just the kit lens - minimal crop for composition and no tubes etc :

p.s. That does sound steep for a 1000d. Argos's EBay shop are doing the 450D + lens for £360 (you'd have to check that it was the IS version though)
