Why ? the store has had to buy in that product for you or anyone else to try and pay the rent and rates for a shop front for you to walk into to try it, then will know doubt be asked to sell it cheaper as its a demo unit :cuckoo:

So just like a perfume shop, when we try a perfume one we have to buy it their too? same as in a car dealer? you have to pay for the car after test driving it?

if camera shops want to earn a sale, they gotta provide a better service then having a demo product out for people to test! and paying over the odds for just demoing a product is a complete rip off.

Well thats the same, as the games can be bought cheaper online aswell at Play.com and The Hut etc.

As mentioned above the mentality today wants everything for nothing with no consequences, when there are no highstreet shops left the same people will then be moaning the fact that they can't see or try any of these products :shake:

everything for nothing? i dont know what country your from but in here in the UK we pay for almost everything! if the PM had his way, he would also charge us for breathing air!

everything for nothing? LOL come on:bonk:

I get the point you are making, there are a few differences though. But before that the perfume market manufactures specific testers they come with reduced packaging. There has been quite an online industry sprung up selling those testers interestingly. Cars have specific demonstrators, you will not be able to just test drive any of the cars in the range. But anyway this is all relevant.

I think the point people get worked up about, and I know I do but are going to chill in the sunshine here after :D, is intention. If you have done your research which lets face it most of us do. And you know you are going for an online only price or an import even, but obviously you can't try the lens out and thus with no intent of purchasing you are trying it out on the highstreet. Then yes I do have a problem with it. At the very least I think one should try and negotiate but also be realistic in the negotiations that a brick and mortar shop won't be able to meet an online VAT dodging import price. And also what value would anyone put on the assistants time to show you the equipment, the ability to return and discuss. They are all considerations.

One can do of-course what one does but I know I wished I supported our local greengrocers and bakers more. Perhaps they would still be in business. My butchers is still there, and he could tell me the name of the cow I want my Sunday roast from :D

The one good thing I noticed about Jessops when I bought my 60D is that if the item is available for collection in your local store, you pay less online and get it from a bricks and mortar store. Their prices online are about £50 more. Personally for the sake of £50 on a £1000 purchase (Inc grip, battery, card, etc) I think it's worth it.

My local camera shop just went under after over 30 years if trading. They even merged with another store to try and save themselves but with the likes of WHE having massive stock levels and low(er) running costs, plus the economy in the UK being completely in the toilet, the high street stores, especially smaller or family run ones are pretty much doomed.

Thanks for those photos Odd Jim, spot on they are, now just to find one lol.

So places where I am comparing the prices whilst speaking to my local shop, which are Misfuds, Park Cameras, Castle Cameras etc, they all have " Bricks and Mortars shops " don't they?
Yet they don't charge a massive mark up?

Canon 35 f/2:

Mifsuds £229
Park Cameras £220
Castle £229
Jessops £229

What's the problem?

Interesting thread and while not wishing to upset anyone - already done that elsewhere, seems to me the OP has pretty much answered his own question.

If, with all due respect, you don't want to pay shop prices it is your choice. Don't expect them, then, to keep stock which on the off chance you may want to walk in and try.

I use two local retailers because I can generally get what I want from them at a reasonable cost, (my opinion of a reasonable cost may not be yours).
One, in Preston, generally hold the more 'exotic' items and their prices are in line with t'inteweb. The other, in Chorley, are convenient - so I pay their prices.

If you don't want to support local business - your choice as I say, don't bitch when they don't have the stock though.

They are in business to make money, (something that has become a dirty word in the UK as everyone wants a 'bargain'), and have overheads to cover. Their profit margins are governed by these overheads and buying prices. Many internet suppliers have overhead levels of almost zero.

Good luck with your search

yeah it was'nt supposed to be an angry thread, but some people like to call and stir without reading properly, not for 1 minute did i say i would just go local to try gear out and then buy online, but yes i did say i would not pay steeper prices from a local shop when " a host of other advertised bricks and mortars places " sell them cheaper....

Unfortunately, Martin, these things do wind people up:shake:

Ultimately you have the choice of where you buy any product thanks to the fairly relaxed laws we enjoy.

Whether or not you get the service level you deem suitable will influence your choice.

The retailer has his or her own level of service they can or are willing to give at a price.

The contract between you and them when buying is also fairly relaxed - they can offer a product to you at a price, you can decide whether or not you are willing to pay it.

I made this point in another thread and got flamed for thinking it was reasonable to pay more to buy from a local dealer if I go in use their demo lenses and take up the salesman's time getting advice to make sure I get the right product. I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels the same.

I just hope that there are enough people taking their custom to the local independent shops so that they can stay in business and continue to offer their extra services over online retailers.

So you honestly go to the shops for advice rather then asking here for some "free" legit advice from hands on users who are not salesmen trying to make money off you purchasing something way over budget?

:bang:
