Breaking News (literally!).

Dropped my D3 during a shoot, from a height of 1ft, 70 to 200 attached, lens appears to have taken the impact - an F9 exposure now looks like f2.8 :D

Oh well.....looks like my other glass will be getting a walk in the park for a wee while :D

Ouch.... I hope it is insured :|

I'm going out on a limb here: did it have the lens-hood on it?
I only ask as mine was subjected to similar bashing without any probs, right up until the one that killed it, which was a fairly gentle (I thought, by comparison) bash against a wall that I was climbing over. Killed the AF-mechanism, though it focussed in manual-mode OK...
I guess you have to tap it 'right' and it goes a bit Pete Tong...
T'was a f/2.8 VR Mk 1, yes?

*edit* - just a thought: might it be worthwhile laying down those shiny 'soft' floor-tiles? Might help prevent a repeat performance...also might cushion any falling infants...lol

Pretty much exactly as you describe mate. It works if I dismount it, put it back on. The minute I change it from whatever aperture I have it on, it goes to what looks like maybe f4 and whilst I can get even more exposure from f2.8, f4 to f22 are all uber bright identical shots....

It was a soft fall - no major fright on my part. My exact words to my worried client - "Don't worry, these are built like tanks".

:D

Insured with Imagine Insurance.

I dropped a 1D MKII and 24-70 2.8 from about 2ft 6 onto bare rock and it survived with nothing more than a couple of scratches to the paint work.

Nikons.. pfft :p

Imagine Insurance very sympathetic on the phone. They have sent paperwork, I have been asked to provide two estimates for repair from repairers of my choosing, and if the lens is damaged beyond economical repair then I have to send a quote for my choice of replacement. Is that a VRII I see on the horizon? :D

It'll be the VR2 as it will be new for old. When I took my policy out with Aaduki I asked them about what value to put down for the 80-200 as it was my only 2nd hand lens of any value. The chap said "hmm don't think you can get them here now can you". I agreed and pointed out that the direct replacement is a 70-200 vr 2. "Then put that down as the value" was his reply......

I am still being very careful with it though.

Maybe your need for that colour cast fix in CaptureNX has gone away.... tsk the things people will do to avoid tweaking stuff :D

You will LOVE one of those Gary, they are the dogs crown jewels :D

For someone who just dropped their camera your pretty cheery? :P

Meh - its a tool. I use the D3 as a doorstop to the office between shoots, its battered. I don't care :D

I want a VRII now though.....but if the lens it within the realms of economic repair, then I'm stuck with this beast!

I was secretly hoping it was the camera, as I swear to god the first thing I would have done is drive to calumet and get the D3X.

That's so they can charge you for insuring a £2k lens instead of a £500 one, as I found out when I added my old 300 f/2.8 to my policy

It's fair enough as far as I'm concerned. If someone nicks it I get enough to replace it. The 80-200 is still a lovely lens though but if I could go back in time I would have bought the 70-200 f2.8 vr1 and spent the £500 on a cheaper alternative to the 24-70 because, especially on the D700, I find that the 70-200 range is better for me (being the same as say 50-135ish on the D200). Not to worry though, once my studio is done and I have a whole load of new Lencarta kit I will start saving........

(the 24-70 might be better in my studio !)

I did exactly the same, but I was unlucky and the lens barrel cracked, flooding the internals with seawater. Felt physically sick....still feel sick now thinking about it :(
