I have a Nikon AF-S 18-70 mm (F3.5-4.5) lens on the D5000. Okay so the lens has seen quite abit of abuse (difficult to explain, but it gets dragged around in some pretty awrful locations).
The other day I was reviewing photographs taken on Monday, I have been aware that the lens seems to be softer than it used to be, but a couple of the images were just odd. I had focused on a table top, but the itmes on the table were OOF whilst the itmes on the floor were sharper !!!!
I knew I had focused on the table and checked with Nikon View, I had not focused and recompsoed as the itmes on the table were th ones of interest.
Anyway I am unable to post the actual images, work, but I have recreated it.
This image was taken at 18 mm, F4 with the focus on around the "2" on the tape measure, certianly not on the blocks in the trolley on the floor. Plain of focus about 60 cm from table top.

Second image form same distance, F4.5 but zoomed in to 70 mm and the "2" is a heck of a lot sharper, with the blocks OOF.

DOF calc indicates that at 18 mm F4 there would be about 18 cm (8 in fornt and 10 behind. The floor is 60 cm from the table top (and thus 120 cm from the plain of focus).
Over to you, but I can only assume that the lens is knackered
(n.b. took same imiange using an old AF-D 28 mm lens, manual focus and it was spot on.)
