Hi all,
I feel like there must be threads on this but I've tried searching and couldn't find any... so sorry if I'm duplicating.
I currently own a 40D but am considering switching to a 5D classic since these are now so reasonably priced second hand (£400 - 500 ish). The main reasons I'm thinking of switching are:
- Better IQ - I love the almost dream like images I see from 5Ds
- Access to EF lenses as they were intended. I've been hankering after a 24-105 for a while but just don't think it makes sense on a crop (or as much as I'd need a wide angle to compliment)
- I've been frustrated at the lack of quality standard primes for crop bodies. I've got the Sigma 30mm 1.4 and whilst it's ok I'm not blown away.
- I just can't bring myself to pay £800 for the 17-55 2.8 IS - a non L lens and so I'm struggling with what I can do to up the quality from the 40D + Sigma 17-70 combo. Full frame seems like the answer...
I'm aware that it's an older camera but still very competent I believe? What might I miss vs the 40D? I've read that the 5D needs cleaning more due to lack of sensor cleaner. I guess I'd just have to learn how to deal with that.
I think full frame would make me happy!! I don't tend to take much wildlife or action photography so I don't think the slower AF or FPS would be an issue. IS the AF on the 5D as bad as some say? I struggle to believe it.
The other consideration is lenses. I'd have to sell my Sigma 30mm 1.4 and 17-70. The only lens I have which would transfer are my Canon 70-300 IS and nifty fifty 1.8. I think I would be ok using the 50mm as my only standard lens short term (I'd probably get the 50mm 1.4 later) until I can get a standard walkaround. I'd be torn between saving up for the 24-105 vs getting something else as a temporary solution. What would people recommend as a cheaper temporary walkaround zoom for the 5D?
So I guess what I'm asking is whether I'm right to be thinking of making the switch and if there's anything else I should consider. You may have guessed that budget is an issue - I can justify spending a few hundred quid on top of the estimated £600 I'd get from selling the 40D, 30mm and 17-70. So that won't stretch to a 5D II, but I should be able to get a 5D Classic + 24-105 eventually.
Thanks in advance.
Eddie.
