Morning all.

Just as a bit of a comparison and to get some different views..

If all you lovely Canon owners had £600 to spend on glass and had none just now, which would you get, 2nd hand is fine??

I'd try and get a 17-55mm IS f/2.8 if I could.
I'm not sure if you would pick one up for £600 2nd hand but I would certainly be looking for one.
If you wanted 2 lenses then I would agree with Kenny.
 
24-105L can be had for just over £600 2nd hand.
 
there would be a few options available, and hundreds more combinations, here is just a few

Canon 28-70 f2.8 L - used

or

Canon 70-200 f4 L - used

or

Canon 50mm f1.4 - new/used
Canon 100mm f2.8 macro usm - new/used

or

Sigma 28-70 f2.8 ex dg - new £238
Canon 70-200 f4 L - used approx £400

it all depends what you really want to shoot and what camera you have (for use of ef and ef-s lens)
 
If I was starting from scratch I would get the 70-200 f/2.8 secondhand,

if I had that sort of money now I would try to find a 135m f/2 secondhand, although it would mean saving a bit more or waiting a while to find one at that sort of price!
 
It depends what you want to shoot, under what conditions (lighting, weather etc) and how you wish to balance ultimate image quality within a narrow range of useage vs lower quality over a wide range of focal lengths.

Do you want to shoot landscapes, wildlife, portraits, indoors, sports, one lens does all etc. etc.. What are your aspirations for the future e.g. will you be needing fast glass, such as f/2.8 and faster? Will your shooting style require IS? What body do you have now? Is it 1.6X crop, 1.3X crop or full frame? If you're on a cropper, do you plan to go full frame any time soon? etc. etc..

Without telling us how/what you shoot the question has almost as many answers as "What car should I buy with £5K to spend?" If we don't know your needs then we can't answer the question meaningfully.
 
Exactly as tdodd said above, but my vote would be 24-105 F4 IS L for a walkabout lens, or the 70-200 (pick the one that matches what you wanttto spend or use it for) for a telephoto.
 
As tdodd said, ok £600 to spend, but what are you going to take images of. landscapes/cityscapes, portraits, general photography, macro, indoor, outside, sports..... :thinking: options from wide angle, fisheye, prime, zoom, walkaround etc vast selection. Some help would help :shrug:

As for new or used, well I just bought a used 300mm f2.8, condition mint, for £1100 less than new, so don't dismiss the 2nd hand option, only word of advice is that its a trusted source, so you'll have comeback (a guarantee) if things go wrong.
 
I think it would have to be the 24-105 if it was for general usage. If there were portrait stuff required, I'd consider splitting the budget and buying an 85mm F1.8 and a Tammy 28-75. I'm not a big fan of the Tammy as I think the Canon L equivalents do colours better, but as a stop gap, it would do.
 
If I could only find mint 70-200mm f/2.8 USM for £600! f/4 IS USM is also very good.

Then 24-105, 100mm macro (there is the new L as well), Tokina 11-16, Canon 17-55mm, Tamron 17-50 VC (just wait a bit), 17-40mm f/4, 85mm f/1.8 USM and most L primes (except 50mm f/1.2 helL USM)
 
For me it would be either an 'L' lens (not sure which) or 50mm f1.4 & 85mm f1.8. I would then spend the rest on old manual lenses and a Cadburys Cream Egg!

one lens??? 17-55 f2.8
or perhaps an L glass walk about 24-105 if they were in budget
no glass though? something cheaper and a 55-250IS or 70-300IS
 
depends on what you shoot...

I would look at either the 17-55 2.8 or 70-200 f4
 
100-400 at £600 would grab my attention :thumbs:
 
FF - 85mm F1.8
Crop - 50mm F1.4

Put the change towards any needed computer upgrades & backups and a flash.
 
I got a 300m f4 for about £450 2nd hand on fleabay last year. I did get lucky with that one though!
