i want to get into motorsport photography and had a go at castle combe a few weeks ago at the spring action day and only had the 18 - 55 kit lens on a 1100d body, i was no where near filling the frame even at full zoom and when trying to crop down so that the car was the main focus, the image looked absolutelely terrible, no detail and looked really grainy, so from very little knowledge i concluded that it was that i wasn't close enough and not that it was out of focus/wasn't panning correct etc as when looking at the original it all looks sharp (ish) and no motion blur on the car (except the wheels) would i be correct in thinking this? and would this lens be and ideal budget upgrade as a stop gap before i have enough to get an 'l' series lens?

Hi Danny,

This lens is average and seriously nothing special. If I was you id save up and get a slightly better lens with IS. The IS will help you no end when shooting with camera in hand.

Hi matthew,

thanks for your advice, i am actually planning on getting the Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8 L IS II USM Lens, but only being an apprentice mechanic it's going to be a long while before i have anywhere near enough money for it so just wanted something cheap (without compromising too heavily on iq)
is there a similarly priced lens that would be suitable?

How about this one? is this good quality? and would the focal length be long enough for trackside shots?

You're better off with the 55-250 IS than the 75-300 non IS imho.
I've got both and much prefer the 55-250.
The lack of the 50mm on the long end is more than made up for by the better IQ so you can just crop a little tighter and still get a nicer image than you would using the 75-300 at 300mm. ;)

is the 100-400 equally as good iq? or if it isnt as good is it justified by a much lower price, i mean would the extra spend be worth it on the 70-200 by iq?

thanks, for £20 or so then it's probably worth me getting the 50-250is. ive only had a short go with this lens on my uncles camera (different body so don't know wether the difference was the body or the lens, what is your opinion of it? is it nice and sharp?
 
The 55-250 is a great lens!
Ok, so it's not particularly solidly built but it's light, has a decent range and the IQ puts it way above it's price bracket.
It's one of the best lens bargains out there, I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
It's probably the perfect stop-gap until you've saved enough for a 70-200. ;)
I was thinking of selling mine but after using it saturday to shoot a running event and reminding myself how good it is I'm now keeping hold of it.
