depends how much i get into the video neil, i spec'd the machine on pc-specialist. what do you think i could downgrade which would not affect performance to much?

I've built a hackintosh for a friend of mine and borrowed it for 2 weeks to edit some films on. It was 1080p footage from my 5D mk2. Here's a quick run down of what I found as the spec was similar to yours.

Core i7 is a good choice for processor, tonnes of power and you'd be surprised at how lazy it is when rendering footage. An i5 would work just as well however, along as you spec the quad core ones. IIRC, a couple of the i5 processors have hyperthreading. I'd avoid them personally. 4 solid cores is my preference IMO.

32GB of ram is the most you could probably put in that laptop and dependant on what you're doing, you won't use it all. 24GB is probably the best limit 2x4's and 2x8's. I purposefully tried to upscale a 60 second 1080p clip to 4k using the export feature and it was only then that everything kicked in. The quality was shocking, but in my opinion 24GB is fine for seemless video work. If it's cheaper to buy 32GB however, just get 32GB.

The GPU you chose is a fine choice, Nvidia's CUDA (i'm pretty sure it's CUDA) technology is awesome for video applications. The 770m might be overkill if you're wanting to slim down, look at some of the high 6xx range. The 680m gets some good write ups.

If I we're you, you'd notice the real difference by having a big SSD and a big fast HDD too. I had every programme available on an SSD and the boot time was impressive for every application. If it we're my money, it'd stick the fastest 1TB HDD in alongside it and be happy as larry. I can't vouch for the performance or reliability of Plextor ssd's as I've only ever used Corsair, OCZ or Crucial ones and never had a problem. I'm sure you'll be fine.

For everything else, it's pretty standard laptop peripherals other than USB 3. USB 3 is absolutely fantastic for having scratch disks plugged in as it's just fast enough to not bottleneck the system :). Definitely pick up a USB 3 external HDD for all your raw footage and vaults and whatnot.

Hope this helps :)

thanks alex, thats a really helpful post.

i am defo going for a quad core intel chip i74700mq - 2.40ghz dont think any point going to 2.80ghz, there is only options for either 8, 16 and 32gb memory, think will go for 16gb. gpu only available as either 770 or 765 2.0 - may just go with 765.

ssd only available at 256 have spec'd a 750gb running at 7200rpm. think with the connectivity options firewire etc and the 3.0 usbs one is a powered connection the laptop is pretty good. plus also got a blurray reader and writer.

Depends on the money saved.... How much extra for each option? (I suspect graphics is not worth it)
