opinions please - best 70-300 for both dx and fx

Hi everyone - need your opinions/experience please - what is the best resolution/sharpest 70-300 lens (or that kind of spread 80-280 etc) for both a dx and fx Nikon - i'm looking at Nikon tamron sigma tokina what else you have .

I want to sell my Nikon 300mm f4 as often I do not use the top end but need it just in case .

your experience please

All 70-300 lenses are FX so take your pick (the DX equivalent being 55-200). The Nikon VR version or the latest Tamron VC version are both excellent.
 
I've used the Nikkor a lot (both the older non-VR and the VR) and the VR is streets ahead optically as well as having the VR. I've had a brief play with a Sigma APO non OS and even the older Nikkor blew it away. Not even played with the Tamron - I'm more than happy with the VR Nikkor.
 
I have a Tamron 70-300VR, produces great results and gets highly recommended in reviews. Only thing I have seen people moan about this lens is the slight clunk noise when the VR kicks in.
 
My Nikon 70-300 VR is my favourite lens on my D700 - the majority of my landscape shots are taken with and it is very sharp with the large pixels of the D700. It struggles a bit on my V1 (on the FT1 adaptor) but that has tiny pixels.

However, I would happily have the Tamron too, both are similar enough in performance that I would consider them to be all but the same so really it just comes down to price (and resale value if that bothers you, the Nikon will probably hold its price a bit better but not enough to worry I'd have thought).
 
The only struggle I have with the 70-300 on a V1/FT1 is that it's sometimes too long!
