Hi Guys,

Just after your opinions, excuse me for my slight ignorance I've been out of the scene for a while! :thumbsdown:

Before I stopped taking photos I used to shoot with a Canon 10D with some Canon L Glass. My question is, do you think I would be better off looking towards a "newer" body rather than buying a 10D again? I was blown away with the quality of photos I had with the combinations of gear used back then.

I understand that I may not find a mint 10D and would probably have more chances with a newer body. Should I seek to purchase a newer body i.e. 20/30/40D to give me that extra bit of flexibility?

What would you do in this situation!

Really depends how much cash you're happy to splash... I wouldn't go with the 20d tho, the 30d or 40d I would consider, but thats quite a price jump from a 10d.
 
I guess a lot depends on how much you want to spend......!
There has been lots of improvements since the 10D came out, but I would guess that getting a decent lens, especially if you were used to using L lenses would be a very important factor.
What lenses did you use/might you want to buy again and how much do you want to spend are the big questions first. Obviously second hand isn't an issue if you are wondering about a 10D so have a think, post lots of posts here until you can access the classifieds and take it from there - Good luck !
 
For the body, up to approx £400. I imagine I would be able to obtain a 30/40D easily with this budget? The lenses, that's a different matter really. I know that the 10D teamed with a good lens is a good match. But I suppose I should get over the fact that the 10D is considered a dinosaur now with the new Canon bodies. (I used to have a Canon D30 before that which I also loved, lol!)

I guess I have to be practical with my decisions... Whilst trying to satisfy the criteria for the classifieds here! :-P

The 30d you can usually get for about £250, and the 40d is usually £350ish (I think) They are both decent cameras, and I don't think you'd be disappointed with either.
 
Agreed - the 30d is a good camera and will feel similar to your old 10d.
I have not had a 40d so cannot comment on that.
so, now that we have saved you some money on the body what about the lenses...?
Obviously you know enough about photography to know that you will need to factor in other costs, like memory cards, maybe a tripod or flash etc etc depending on what sort of pictures you like to take !
 
I will have to see what's around when I can actually browse the classifieds!

My old kit consisted of:

Canon 50mm 1.8
Sigma 15mm Fisheye
Canon 17-40L
Canon 24-105L
Canon 100-400L

I would seek to replace most of that eventually!
 
I had a 10D the photographs were truly amazing, I thought, then bought my seventeen year old son a Nikon 3100 and Nikkor 28-300 VR and myself a 60D and some lenses, actually the 10Ds photographs then looked truly C***.

Believe me DON'T go back

I think that's it then, I won't bother with spending out on a 10D. :lol:
 
I'm not interested in the live view really! I was having this discussion yesterday regarding the 60D and such that has the flip out screen, HD movie capabilities etc. To me that's edging more towards the point and shoot camera. Personally I wouldn't want these functions on my DSLR. That doesn't discount the fact the 60D is a cracker as with the majority of XXD bodies! :)
 
Everyo0ne says it depends how much you want to spend.. I say it depends on what you want to shoot..

I remember getting a brand new 10d and sigma 70-200 and thinking thats it.. Why would I ever need another camera.. this will do me forever its perfect..and it was at the time :)

A lot of cameras have small but significant improvements with each model.. but the 20d was a BIG improvement of the 10d so you would notice a lot of pluses if you just went for that... But if you can afford then go for the best you can but.. what area of photogrpahy your into should also be taken into consideration when purchasing a camera... For example my camera was 4k to buy and would probably be the last one on a landscape photogrpahers list :)
 
I don't have one defined subject to be honest. Aviation, Motorsports, Wildlife, Outdoors, Holiday snaps (!)... That kinda thing! But then if someone said "I have a XYZ do you fancy it" I wouldn't mind trying that! You know what I'm saying?

I understand what you're saying regarding the 10D, I suppose when I had it I was much like you. I know there is much better these days. I think I am better off with a XXD of some kind though! We'll have to see...

newer body would be a big improvement

for a crop body the 40D is the best in terms of IQ

Why wouldn't you consider the 20D. I've own one for many years, a great camera and personally still hitting above its weight. As for the 30D, why pay more for a camera that didn't offer anything worth its salt as an upgrade. The 40D, maybe, but you talking top of the OPs budget. The 20D still offers a lot as a camera. Still using mine today and taking images like below. Its not the camera but the lens that gets you the results, the camera is only limited by the user and not knowing how best to use it.

20D is actually a very good option if you don't mind the smaller screen and lack of spot metering. They are getting very cheap now too...I've seen them going for as little as £150.00 which is a nonsense!

The 40D really isn't much better than the others (other than liveview which is useful for macro), I was very disappointed as an upgrade as swapped for a 5D fairly quickly. DXOMark rate the sensors inside:

You can see that the 20D and 30D are rated slightly higher than the 40D for high ISO which could be useful. 40D would give you more cropping power though!

Point and shoot, POINT and SHOOT, I have a 60D and I dont point and shoot :bat:
 
I had a 10D and I thought that the only problem was that it was a little sluggish in operation, the 20D I still have now is much more responsive but I don't know if I'd recommend either of these cameras or the 30D these days as they're getting older by the day now and newer cameras may very well be a more sensible buy. I think that if I was going down this route I'd look for a well loved and little used 40D and hope that the mechanicals and electronics had a good life still ahead of them.

One thing that the 10D does have going for it is the shutter / mirror sound, it's quite muted and anyone changing to a 20/30D will be in for a shock at the terrible racket they make.

The thing with options is that you don't have to use them. You just turn them off or ignore them... until the day that you want to use them.

I don't shoot vid but I see the advantages of a swivel screen :D
 
I wasn't interested in live view when I bought my 60D (upgrading from the 30D) but it is VERY handy to get shots in awkward situations. Still, it's not essential if you've got gear and time to render live view pointless.

I actually prefer my 30D over the 60D in a lot of ways; build quality being one of the reasons, although I have launched my 60D across the landing and it's still working, so it's not that bad :D

Okay okay that wasn't a direct insult stating that all 60D users are essentially p&s people. I'm just saying it resembles those features I have with my Canon Ixus P&S! :cool:

Agree with im. Live view is very handy for many situations in the field, in particular for landscapes.

If you could find one for £400 that hasn't been abused too much, love mine but won't sell my MKIIn for that sort of price
