Optical drives will not burn discs

I have a home built PC which was originally put together by a friend. In it I have two sony dvd writers, see the link below for specs.

Running windows 7.


Both drives can read disc no problem, but cannot write. With any disc burning software I try I am told that there are no writable drives available.
This has been an issue from day one, but having not been able to sort it I have resorted to using another machine and ignored the problem. But now, this will be my only machine so I could really do with getting it working.

Any ideas?
 
I'm not sure, I shall have to check this when I get home this evening. I am currently on my work comouter.
 
the most common "fix" for this seems to be to disable UAC and then the burning features come back. give that a test-eo.

also check the firmware on the burner is up to date, normally there is an application on the disk that came with the drive to update it.

However I am with Neil on this, the fact they are both doing the same thing suggests an issue with your PC/Win7. Have you installed the latest motherboard drivers for Win7 ? I think your problem may be with your motherboards SATA drivers. Worth a try if the UAC fix doesnt work.

Do you have a friend with a PC running Win 7 or another OS that you could try one of them in ? (5minute job) Sometimes a simple process of elimination can reap useful info when seeking help.

Right, I have just got back to check your suggestions.

UAC is already disabled.

In 'my computer' both drives are labelled as 'DVD RW drive'.
If I right click either, there is the option to burn.

I have not actually checked or noticed this before, and by creating a disc this way it works. So it seems the issue lies with pieces of software not being able to recognise the drives being there?
