Hi, i am looking for a bit of advice on a second lens for close (ish) wildlife,i currently use a canon 100-400 and i find it not to good in dull conditions unless i boost the iso to 800/1600 ,i have been looking at 70-200 is f4 and the 70-200 2.8 is or non is, and i am a bit confused as to what would be the best set up the would benefit better with a tele converter . i just want a decent choice of set up when i am out and about when the light is not the best ,max budget would be £1500 any help would be apreciated .Thanks

A 70-200 f/2.8 with 1.4x converter will give you 280mm @ f/4 vs the 100-400 which is f/5.6 by then.

Another option is a 300 f/4 L + 1.4x which means you still have 400mm in reach, you get an extra stop @ 300 and this lens has very close focussing for a 300mm. Makes a good butterfly / flower / large bug lens.

To get to 400mm at any faster aperture than you have you'll be struggling without spending much much more.

Oh, and if funds allow, the new 70-200 f/2.8 IS II is a stunningly sharp lens even wide open, which is important if that's where you intend to use it with a telecon.

I don't know Canon's range well so forgive me if I'm barking up the wrong tree here.

The lenses you are suggesting are going to gain you one or two stops but half your long range. If you add a TC you are going to lose some or all of that aperture advantage and still have a shorter range, though maybe better IQ.

I just wonder if £1500 may be better spent on a body that has better high iso performance. I don't know how good your current body is so maybe there is nowhere to go but if there is something that will offer you a stop or two's improvement in high ISO performance, you may find that your current lens is ideal.
