Options for a Travel tripod

Hi All,

Off to the states next Monday for a 2 wk break with the Mrs and the camera gear, but less my Manfrotto tripod. Too heavy to carry round and also, my experience from my last trip to the US (especially NYC) is that security guards seem to classify tripods in the same class as WMD's (!) and refuse you entry to several landmarks with your tripod (happened to me at Empire State Building and the Rockefella Centre last time)

So, question is, what's a good, lightweight, compact, cheap but functional tripod to take on a holiday? Heaviest thing it will need to support is my D300s with the 18-200mm.

All suggestions welcome as I need to get one pronto!

Thanks all.

I'd be inclined to buy one when I get there, cheap but functional to the extent that I could ditch if need be if my luggage is over allowance on the trip back.

Velbon Ultra Maxi M or L

Small, cheapish and relatively stable

I have the older Luxi F and very pleased with it indeed

Thanks for the tips and advise guys - gives me some food for thought.

Nattelie - that you very much for your kind offer, but I think I'll probably end up getting one for myself as I'm sick of carrying my Manfrotto around and could do with a 2nd , lightweight one to use more often.

Gorillapod?

Great because you can take it anywhere.

Manfrotto 785B is the other good choice. Folds down uber small. Hacksaw the silly ball head that comes with it away, embed some appropriate nuts in the newly exposed shaft with liquid metal, and then screw in a proper head, and voila. Nice head on a reallly small body.

Beanbag.

Cheap, light, better than any sub £300 tripod.

In fact there's a chap on this very forum who supplies some very good ones. You can find his site here:

(I took my Gitzo and Markins combo to Australia in March, along with the beanbag. Never took the tripod outta the suitcase.)
