Ordinary Light?

I'm trying to take some portrait photos, and the light is all wrong, I'm going to invest in an umbrella, but would a lamp from somewhere like homebase, with a daylight bulb work behind it just to shed some more natural light?
At the moment I'm not in a position to pay much , so while it is just a bit of fun and I'm only taking these for my personal use, is there any "home remedies" using things i may be able to afford, preferably things which i may already have around the house!

Some large reflectors may help at low cost.

if the colour temperature is the same as daylight it should be alright ,,shoot in raw and i should think that you can alter the white balance afterwards .
