My MacBook pro is doing my head in, I keep getting the spinning wheel which freezes everything for a minute or so and then everything is ok again for a few minutes before it happens again. I thought it might be memory so I upgraded that and now have 8gig. I have also run the verify disk in disk utility which brought up some errors, which I repaired and it now seems to be ok. Any other ideas?

Has running disk utility solved the problem or has it just fixed the disk errors ?
 
Try cleaning out your caches. OnyX is quite a good tool for making it easy.
 
I have fixed it guys, I noticed in the activity monitor that "air video server" was running but this wasn't on the menu bar. I stopped the process and removed the app and now things are fine!

I have found the problem

I was doing "verify disk" on the top level drive not the mounted drive. It seems that I have some errors that can not be repaired and I need to backup, format the drive and reinstall.

I now have to work out how to do that when Lion doesn't have installation disks.

That seems pretty extreme, I wouldn't trust that drive any more and get it replaced. But before you do that, boot from the installer partition and then run the disk utility to verify. But something is not right and I suspect the HDD.

You could clone the installer partition to an external drive, or even get an enclosure for it and boot from it to then install on your new drive. Or if you want to keep your existing drive you can just boot form it and reinstall.
 
If the drive is starting to throw errors I'd stop trusting it and get your stuff backed up now. Then replace it.

You don't have th lion disk as you downloaded it? In that case can't you just reinstall snow leopard then upgrade?
 
I have just dug out the receipt, Feb 2011, so I guess I'll contact apple support and get them to replace the HD. I am backed up to a few days ago and haven't deleted any RAW files from my cards since the last backup so at worst I've lost a bit of processing time...
 
Apple are getting a local repair company to swap out the hard drive. I learnt a neat trick today which I thought I would share in case somebody finds this thread with a similar problem.

Even though the Macbook would not boot up I could restart it and leave the T key held down. This then booted into a Firewire drive state where both the HD and the DVD-ROM were mounted when I connected it to another Mac.

This allowed me to copy my Lightroom library and the rest of the files I had been working on since the last backup.
 
Yes, that is neat indeed.

You could do a very similar thing by connecting via firewire to another Mac and running the migration assistant. That will give you access to the files as well :)
