Watch this news clip and at about 37 seconds you'll see why not to buy a used lens from a photo-journalist  I hope you don't treat your stuff like this guy does.

Heh. I thought I wish I was there. Its a lens. Breaks, insurance, new one. He got the shot though.

The amazing part of that clip is that the photographer didn't seem the least worried about how it banged!

Only the lens hood...
The body took the impact

it was simply laid down a little ruff! lenses are not frigile to the extend you have to keep a 100ft cordon around them!

yes they are expensive, but also replaceable and to be honest the pro lenses that i have seen use are cosmetically battered but still perform flawlessly.

as far as i could tell the lens hood stopped any damage to the front element.

When I did the Gaza protest in Edinburgh the pro's were literally dropping their lenses around on the tarmac. I remember because I heard one guys L zoom lens bouncing on the ground as he dropped it and reached for his second body. His lenses and bodies were all scratched and scuffed... but if you get the right shot I'd imagine it'd easily pay for a replacement.

I was expecting it to be something actually rough, I would very much doubt that a little knock like that would do any damage at all. Obviously most people keep their camera's wrapped up all day long and never take it out in case it might get damaged.

I couldn't imagine being precious about my gear, you would miss far far to many photo op's.

I could so get into that. I love the idea of photo journelism

i would be very concerned about the camera. the mount on the camera can't be too healthy if that happened at fairly regular frequency. hmmm.... suppose these guys gets paid quite well and thus a lens pop is worth of photos obtained.

not sure I would like it in that situation tbh. A bit too chaotic and this is meant to be the tamed ones. Imagine a proper riot or tens of thousands march etc...

That's whatcha gotta do to get the bread; If he was worrying about whether he was going to damage the thing he probably would've missed the timing on the shot he was after.

i guess aswell that if he's working for a magazine and not working freelance the mag would pay for the gear.

I found the protest I did extremely exciting.

The lens probably suffered no damage at all.
If think what the o p was taking about was buying a lens off a pro like that. Imagine, 4-5 jobs like that a day, 7 days a week, the lens is obviously going to suffer a little in the long run. Sure, the journo will go and buy another lens easily enough, but would you be happy if you were the one who bought that lens of him????

Dean:)

Need some kind of quick release lens cap that shoots off when you half click the shutter button.

Should be useful for some interesting reactions if doing some close up portrait work too.

"Hey your lens cap is still o" *SPROING*

It would be silly to buy a lens without seeing it first and I think photos would show up any scratches.

through out the clip all the 70-200 tht all the togs are bouncing around everywhere. The bounce on the ground seems like a normal day at the office.

 ey, i would like to hear how you practise protesting, sounds very interesting :D

LOL I was in the middle of the action at the Chinese New Year celebrations today. Getting pushed and shoved and still trying to compose a shot. It's bloody hard!

Not all of us feel the need to wrap our gear in cotton wool and polish it everyday
some of us actually use the kit !

all of the press togs take their risks that way with their kit.

once seen a press tog have his macbook pro disassembled at a football game as a couple of players ended up fallign through it, and on more than one occasion seen the ball smack them out of their hands

Looks really exciting doing all that kind of stuff, must be hard to get that money shot when all hell breaks loose.:)

That's the important thing, get the shot. A camera is replaceable, you can't ask to re-enact the event lol

He doesn't have time... And you can bet your life he didn't bother checking the camera was working OK until after those shots were safely with the news editors...

The funniest thing is that he wont put the pictures in the people forum section here, hoping that someone likes them.....!!!

You'll need more practice than that lol.
