c+c please
thank you your advice is so helpfull

I can't view your EXIF data, but this doesn't solely look like a focussing issue. The subject appears to be moving, so I guess that some of the softness here is due to motion blur, the shutter speed needs to increase to 'freeze' this moment to ensure critical sharpness.

The other thing to be wary of is that a shallow Depth of Field will making nailing the focus that much trickier, shooting that shot at something like f8 rather than f4 would help too.

Cheers,
James

thanks james thats good to know sorry whats EXIF ??

It's the extra information attached to image files - it records things like shutter speed etc. - very useful!

oh yes sorry should of put this on post

iso 200
f1
1/80 sec
dont know if its right

That looks like a focus issue. Or rather a depth of field issue. Does that adaptor mean that the lens is always wide open? Depth of field will always be shallow in that case.

I find that focusing a crop format DSLR, like your Sony A200, is much harder than it ever was with full frame 35mm film cameras due to the viewfinder image being much smaller. Autofocus is much easier and very accurate. You'll just need to be extremely careful.

As said, EXIF data is tagged to every digital image and records all the camera and lens settings, but if you have manual adapter it will not be able to pick up lens settings.

Edit: crossed post, but f/1 is obviously wrong. If that's EXIF it's just defaulting to lowest figure. You could also be getting some camera shake and subject movement blur at 1/80sec also.

f 1/80 is to slow for shooting sharp sots of kids if they are not really still.

Bump the ISO up to 800, which will give you a 1/320 shutter speed.

If you are shooting at f1 ? you'll only get a very small part of that sort of image in focus. ie the eye but not the nose

M42 lenses have a small pin which sits at the bottom of the lens when it's correctly mounted. The camera is supposed to push this in when the picture is taken, otherwise the lens stays permanently fixed at maximum aperture.

Some adaptors will push the pin in, so you can adjust the aperture manually. You focus and compose at lowest (brightest) f/number, then close the lens down to the correct f/number for exposure. It's a right faff. Or your lens might have an auto/manual switch which will also close the aperture down to the correct f/number. Either way, you'll soon get tired of that and want to get a new lens. Sorry :(

If you are unable to adjust the aperture from f/1.8 remember that DoF is also dependant on distance to the subject, so you can increase the DoF and so make focusing easier by just increasing the distance to the subject and then cropping the result as necessary
